France and Crawford have destroyed JV with a lot of low power hits... It baffles me how our hitters can’t even do that. It’s like all contact is easy grounders or weak flyouts. But you know that isn't really true. It may feel that way when they're struggling, but 6 of our main position players are hitting .260 or better (7 if you put in Diaz over Maldonado). And we have 5 players with OBPs of .360 or better. We have the 3rd best AVG in the AL and 5th in all of baseball. We're 4th in all of baseball in Hits. We're 5th in RBI. The offense has been inconsistent (on par with recent seasons) but still very good overall. The problem is on the defensive side. In the past, even when we had slumps, our pitching and defense would keep us in games. This year our pitching is middle of the pack (and awful in the second half), and our defense has been bad with the pitching not good enough to make up for it. Every error or passed ball seems to end up costing more runs than it should. Bregman has been very good. The CF trio has been very good. And Pena has been good (but not like last year). That's it defensively. Maldonado has been awful. Altuve has been awful. Tucker has been surprisingly awful. LF has been average (better with Chas playing there more now). Abreu has been horrible offensively, but guess what? Also horrible defensively. We scored 5 runs in each of these last two Royals losses. That should win you most ballgames. Unfortunately we gave up 7 and 6... |

NGL, I don't even care if they play anymore this season. I don't know how I feel. On one hand, I want to see if they can get hot and have another good postseason. On the other... it might be more beneficial to have them miss the postseason and get some extra rest this offseason and regroup in 2024 (hopefully with extensions to Altuve, Bregman, Tucker, and Framber) since I don't really think they can compete at a high enough level pitching/defense-wise to go far. |

If you needed more reason to be pessimistic: just remember that the last time that Verlander faced Seattle was in the 2022 ALDS when they pummeled him to the tune of 10 Hits and 6 ER in just 4 IP. We still managed to win that game thanks to late-inning heroics by Bregman and Yordan.

You can generally rely on the offense to blow a team out or be in a major funk. The pitching, hitting, and defense cannot hang in a close game, which is a tremendous departure from ‘22. Maldonado was bad at mobility due to his weight, but the CS% thing is a result of pitchers not caring to keep runners close anymore. Altuve is a master of many things, but he was never Roberto Alomar at 2B. Peña has good range and a mediocre arm. The lack of extreme shifts has hurt both. The only reliable defender on the infield is Bregman. |
