He hasn't signed a "coveted" young free agent to a mega deal because those deals have never ever panned out to be worth it.
Which mega deal worked out?

Kenta Maeda to the Tigers, $24 million over two years.

Sonny Gray and the Cardinals, three years, $75 million. Will be his age 34, 35, and 36 seasons. Considering what he's done after leaving the Yankees, fairly reasonable.

I don’t know about $25 million a year for a 34-year old who doesn’t play everyday. Curious move for a team that’s closer to the valley than the peak.

I don’t know about $25 million a year for a 34-year old who doesn’t play everyday. Curious move for a team that’s closer to the valley than the peak. He has a 3.22 ERA in the last five seasons. He's essentially be a low-end number one starter for half a decade. $25 million really doesn't seem high when you consider what the high-end guys like JV have gotten in recent years (and even older!) St. Louis had the third-worst pitching staff in the NL last year, so I think they're viewing it as "we'll be right back in it if we sign some arms." And their division is mediocre so I can't blame them.

Gray deal seems solid. A little high AAV but it's only a 3-year deal. It's actually very Crane-esque.

I think we need to change the thread name from “hot stove” to “lukewarm stuff simmering on a back burner”. And I kinda think the whole offseason will be the way vis-a-vis the Astros. They’ll pick up a couple of relievers, perhaps some we’ve already had, and call it a day. And if the guys they already have play to their potential that might be good enough. But I’d really like to get the Altuve, Bregman and Tucker contracts resolved.

But I’d really like to get the Altuve, Bregman and Tucker contracts resolved. They've got to get a bat IMO. Yordan should not be playing LF...but even if he does, who is the DH most nights then? They don't even have the depth to do anything compelling at DH when Yordan is in LF now that Yainer will be starting. Unless they just resign Maldonado and actually catch with him multiple times a week...or they plan to put Chas in LF and Dubon is a regular in CF or something. Any way you slice it, awful options if they don't get a legitimate everyday outfielder.

The only way it could happen is if part of the return were a 3B, or if they are really, really high on Dezenzo. But in either case, you'll be taking a downgrade. It could end up working if they go and get a legit bat in the OF but if there's a guy to resign, it's Bregman. 3B is such a thin position across MLB and he's top 5.

Short term it would be a challenge to be without Bergman. No doubt. That said, we may as well get some value for him before he is lost to free agency after next season. If that happens we just get a draft pick. I don’t know who we could have to fill in next year. That’s a great question but Dana will have to earn his keep and figure it out.

With the rumors out there everywhere about Bregman, I am predicting he is already gone by the end of the Winter Meetings. I SERIOUSLY doubt the Astros will trade him. But hey, if the CWS wants to toss us Cease and Robert then by all means. Now, back to reality: Houston intends to play for a WS in 2024. Trading Bregman is the quickest route to third place I can think of.

I agree. But who and how much? I don’t believe they’ll add a FA bat with upcoming salary concerns. I’d love to be wrong.
This was in response to Ash above. Guess I forgot to hit “quote”.

Well if LMC feels good, well then that’s all we need to know, His tendon was off the bone? Please move on from this guy, Dana. Can’t move on. He’s under contract at $17M per. And when the nail/spike/screw/super glue they used to reattach it heals he won’t rip it off again (at least not at THAT end).

[br Fair enough, but Not trading at least one Star player (Ie Bregman) that isn’t signing beyond 2024 could be the quickest route to mediocrity in 2025 and beyond. No way we are able to sign Bregman, Tucker and Altuve to mega contracts.
