It is nice to have a day off and gain a half game on the Mariners (already lost) and a half game on the Rangers (currently losing).

Where the Astros rank offensively by position (using weight Runs Created): C: 11th 1B: 28 2B: 1stSS: 7th 3B: 26th LF: 4th CF: 5thRF: 1stNo real surprises here other than the fact that our LF and CF have been way more productive overall than some may have thought. I'm a little surprised Altuve is still that high with his month of May. Just goes to show how amazing his April was. And of course we all know how awesome Tucker is, and how bad Bregman and our 1B has been. I was surprised by C and so looked it up, and it's even worse with wRC+ which is ballpark adjusted; we're below-average at 98, which is 15th overall. Oddly enough, Yainer's BAbip is basically identical, his walk rate is improved, and he's cut 5.5% off of his strikeout rate! But the power has just vanished. It's crazily similar to Pena last year, who actually improved in several key ways but just stopped hitting for any power out of nowhere. Park adjustment drops 3B down to 28th, ahead of only the Marlins and White Sox. Our 3B are dead-last in batting average; just .197, the only team south of the Mendoza line at that position. Bregman should really be ashamed of himself at this point. Diaz has hit some balls hard but he isn't lifting enough of them. I think it will change. Bregman has been bad...

So we go into the Oakland series 4.5 games back. If we can have a good series there's a chance we could be playing Seattle for first place after that.

Drew Pomeranz was released by the Dodgers. He returned from the IL about a month ago and recently has thrown some really good looking innings for their AAA club. He can be a really effective late-inning LH reliever when he's right. Could be worth a shot.

Meanwhile we're running guys like Montero and Mushinski and Martinez out there. But never mind, Giants snatched him up on a Major League deal immediately.

Despite everything, 3.5 games back. This season hasn't gone the way anybody wanted or mostly expected, but still in a good position to take first place. Take first place while staying healthy, and anything can happen in the postseason.

Astros claim Kaleb Ort from the Orioles. Interesting pickup. 96 MPH average fastball, but command issues. Been getting beat up in limited innings this year, but maybe new coaching and a change of scenery can help. x.com/PatSullivan05/status/1795521177412112557

Chandler Rome:
"Injured Astros starter José Urquidy is seeking a second opinion from renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister and Tommy John surgery is a possibility, two sources with knowledge of the situation said on Monday.
Urquidy, 29, strained his forearm with two weeks left in spring training and has not pitched in the major leagues this season. He exited a minor-league rehab start on May 24 with what the Astros described as “right forearm discomfort.” Team officials expected that to be Urquidy’s final rehab appearance before rejoining the Astros’ rotation.
Urquidy already underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017. He made 16 appearances including 10 starts in 2023, finishing with a career-worst 5.29 ERA, and allowed six earned runs in 10 innings for Houston over three postseason appearances.
The Astros have been silent about Urquidy’s prognosis since he reinjured himself late last month. Asked last week if Urquidy or Cristian Javier had damage to their ulnar collateral ligaments, Houston manager Joe Espada declined to comment.
Both Urquidy and Javier are on the injured list with right forearm injuries."

With the hit to our SP depth, do we dare bring in an arm? Both Grienke and Bauer is out there lookin for a mlb team.

Mushinski to AAA, Nick Hernandez finally gets a call up to the Astros. Urquidy to the 60-day to make 40-man roster space.
