I absolutely love baseball movies. Too bad more have not been made. I found a site that shows that there have only been a little more than a 100 made in cinematic history link
In this little exercise, I want everyone to know there is no right or wrong opinion. Just what are your favorites and why. I think we can keep it civil. Movies- ======= 1. Bull Durham- This may not be the critics choice, but this movie captures the essence and hilarity of the baseball culture, its quirks, and heartaches. Crash Davis may be the most quoted fictional baseball player in history too. 2. The Natural- I am a history buff. Granted this is a fictional tale, but still this movie's attention to detail around the styles and norms of the day is wonderful. Probably the best all star cast assembled for a baseball movie too. (Redford, Duvall, Herschey, Brimley, Baker, etc.). The light smashing HR with the fanfare tune, is truly a magic movie moment. 3. Field of Dreams- Excellent tale of mystique and drive. If you build it they will come, is forever ingrained in our venacular as a metaphor for going after in earnest a crazy dream. This also is probably the one movie ever made guaranteed to make me shed a few tears. 4. Major League- Short and Sweet? Funny as hell from beginning to end. Great story too of a comeback of down trodden misfits. 5. (tie)The Stratton Story and Pride of the Yankees- Okay this is one is skewed a bit by my admiration of epic film stars Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper . Both great movies of the heart. Actors ======== 1. Kevin Costner- The gold standard in this genre. Crash Davis, Field of Dreams. He also starred in a few other lesser movies too. 2. James Earl Jones- Darth gives great performances as the scary Neighbor in the Sandlot and the un ready accomplice to Costner in Field of Dreams. 3. Gary Cooper- His segment recreating Gehrig's farewell address is about the most powerful 5 minutes of any baseball movie. 4. Wesley Snipes- Added to his hilarious role as Willie Mays Hayes, he did a pretty good job too in "The Fan". 5. Barry Pepper- His portrayal of Maris in 61 was mesmerizing. I can remember Roger Maris, and wow did he ever nail the role.

The Natural is the best baseball movie of all-time. Hands down.
Field of Dreams is barely about baseball.

The Natural is the best baseball movie of all-time. Hands down. Field of Dreams is barely about baseball. I agree with the second part. Never really got the hype over Field of Dreams; too bizarre for my tastes. Bull Durham was probably the best, then Major League, then Eight Men Out. Pride of the Yankees and Fear Strikes Out round out my top 5.

Seeing the ghost of Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe coming out of a cornfield? Seeing an aging Burt Lancaster morph into a youthful hopeful baseball player?
Pretty impactful movie IMO, even if plot line is not 100% baseball.

Pretty impactful movie IMO, even if plot line is not 100% baseball. I thought the plotline was about baseball .. just no game action hardly That being said, I'm sure my likes on this topic diverge from most. The movie Billy Crystal made about the Mantle/Maris chase (*61) is one of my top 5. I thought there were so many good performances in that, esp. Bruce McGill as Ralph Houk

man .. I was afraid you'd say that. Ranking them is so hard
5. Major League 4. The Winning Team (1952, Ronald Reagan as Grover Cleveland Alexander) 3. 61* 2. Eight Men Out 1. The Natural
I have to put The Natural #1 cause I saw it in the theater when I was a kid. First at-night movie, and my dad didn't usually join us. But he loved baseball and grew up in Buffalo, where The Natural was filmed

All great movies! I have to admit though I've never seen 8 Men Out. I'll put that on my watch list. I really liked 8 Men Out , though it didn't make my own personal Top 5. Biggest gripe is that there was just so much involved prior, during, and after the scandal that 2 hours wasn't long enough to give it justice. This was a perfect example of where a mini-series would have been a better vehicle for the subject.

As far as I know, it's the only musical about baseball. Which is why it should be banned!!!! The only music for baseball should be intimidating stroll up music, repetitive organ ditties, and standards like the one from Queen where you can stomp and jar your neighbor in front you.
