I don't think anyone thinks he is a 905 ops guy for a season or even a half of a season. He came through today and he has come through on some other occasions but he is really kind of a 700-750 kind of guy. Good backup but not a star. 905 is a star Rotoworld is sold on him....for now.... www.rotoworld.com/teams/mlb/hou/houston-astrosHe has 60 at bats. Take away the home run and the triple today and he is hitting 244 with an ops of 771. I like him, I want him to stay up but he is not a 905 ops kind of guy. Of course an ops of 771 is higher than Gurriel.

It is all about the Pitching but you Still need to Score Runs to win. I use to argue with an Old Forum member about that all the time. If the Astros lost 3-1 or 21 or 3-2 he would blame the pitcher. LOL The offense needs to pick it up, but the most important thing is they have to get timely hits in the postseason with men on base. How many runs we score between now and then isn't as critical given how dominant the pitching has been this season by every measurable stat

Some interesting notes on the game from a Giants fan over at the mccoveychronicles.com site:
A few notes from the park that I’m not sure if you see on tv. D’arnaud hit the ball off himself so hard it rolled all the way out to Bregman at SS. Bregman promptly found a fan and perfectly hit him in the hands. I was impressed. After White hit the homer, I think fans threw it back on the field twice. That was fun. Man, does Ray Black pop the glove in the bullpen! You could hear him warming up over everything in the stadium. Finally, the bullpens must go. I love the look of the pitchers warming up on the field, but I thought Derek Fisher was going to die.
White's HR came off a 99.1 mph fastball, which is interesting because he normally does poorly against the really high velocity pitches. It wasn't a monster shot, only 363ft I think I read, but it got the job done.
Hinch risked overmanaging the bullpen today but I guess with all the off days this month, it's important to keep the RPs from getting rusty.

Giles is making his third appearance for the Jays right now.
Jays had the BoSox down 3-1 in the 7th, then Boston scored 4 to take the lead, then the Jays rallied in the 8th and 9th to tie it.
Funny to see Giles doing the squat in a non-Astros uniform.

Giles gives up a 3-run HR to Mitch Moreland in the 10th... that's 4 runs allowed in 2.2 IP for Toronto so far.

That we have a fan on the board trashing these guys is insane. No wonder none of the new members want to make conversation. I'd be scared if I were an outsider

so Giles gives up a second HR in the inning, this one a 2-run dinger by Bradley Jr, a .209 hitter.
Has to be pulled after 23 pitches and only recording two outs. It would appear the change of scenery isn't helping, not yet anyway. Rogers Center seemed less than impressed.

Back in the offseason, I had White pegged as an .820 hitter so I'd agree that at .905 he's running a little hot. Then again, with only 70 PAs his OPS is going to fluctuate pretty wildly from game to game still.
With such a good start, he has a good shot of finishing the season >850.
White now has a couple more PAs this year than he had last year. wRC+ by year:
2016 - 80 2017 - 126 2018 - 150 as of tonight
That's a steady improvement since his MLB debut. This is his age-27 season so he has a few more years until age-related decline is likely to take a noticeable toll.
I still hold out hope he'll make it to an All Star Game some time between 2019 and 2023. If he somehow managed to have a 900 OPS year and got to start 90% of games, that ought to get him to the ASG. I don't see him making the ASG regularly but most players have a breakout year (like Marwin's 2017) and if White can have one, that may be his ticket to the ASG.

Jays fans are trying to decide on a nickname for Giles
"Krazy Ken" and "Krappy Ken" seem to be frontrunners.

Admittedly I was dozing during the 6th inning of yesterday's game and didn't get to see White's triple, or his getting thrown out at home. (Though I did have this weird dream of Tony Sipp giving up a home run.) But it was poetic how White TOOTBLAN'd in the 6th, to the laughter of the crowd in the picture below... and then redeemed himself in the 8th.

Needless to say, when Sipp actually came in to pitch and I saw the trajectory of the ball off of Hansen's bat, I thought 'Oh shit, darn prophetic dream!'

Ken Giles is a one-trick pony but can’t even control the pitch. So, he relies on getting strikes with the fastball, which gets clobbered because he tends not to throw the slider for strikes. It’s actually a wonder how he doesn’t get lit up more often that he already does. He fooled a lot of people, myself included. I was a huge proponent of the trade which brought him here from Philadelphia. In hindsight, perhaps this was a losing trade, but they couldn’t rest on their laurels with the Harris/Gregerson-led bullpen that blew it against the Royals. I don’t fault Luhnow (or any GM for that matter) for taking a chance on the kid. Maybe someday, he’ll mature and hone both of his pitches. In that event, he’ll be great. The Astros understandably didn’t have the time nor the patience to deal with him anymore. I also wish the best for Osuna in his time here as the probable closer. We can hope he does less of the Giles type outings.

One thing I know for sure is Bradley becomes Stanton whenever he faces Giles, which is a bad look for the closer.

Giles has fallen off of a cliff. I'm sure he'll face his former team when Toronto plays Houston again. Look at the bright side, Britton threw a two run golfer pitch to Abreu last night to blow a two run lead last night to the White Sox, but the Yankees did come back to win the game.

Mike Fiers looked really good against LAD today. No walks and 8 K's over 5.1 IP. Only run he allowed was a solo HR.
It's looking like Treinen will close it out for a 3-2 win.
Somehow I just don't think Fiers would be pitching this well if he were still on the Astros. Too many big personalities in the clubhouse, too much pressure to do better than his (elite) peers... he seems more relaxed when he's on a team where he's one of the better pitchers on the staff.
Also, Ramon Laureano has been called up this month by the A's and he has hit quite well coming out of the gate. After leaving the Hooks and going over to the Oakland organization, Laureano hit .905 OPS in AAA last year.
