time for Deetz to get his shot? Could be. I read somewhere that there were plans to give him a legitimate shot at winning a spot in the bullpen in ST this year, but of course, he went and got himself suspended for testing positive for a PED in the offseason and didn’t get to participate in ST. I will be surprised if he doesn’t get called up in September.

I would think that any minor leaguer that Luhnow may be considering for a roster spot on the Astros next season will be called up September 1st. Right now my September call up list would include:
Definitely- Tucker Fisher Deetz James Stubbs
Maybe:
Reed Whitley
I would have said definitely on Whitley if he had not injured himself after he returned from his suspension. He has missed so much time now that I don’t know if he will be up to full speed by September. I would have said maybe on Straw if he had not gone into the one month + slump he is in now.

Until Fisher improves at the plate, right now I see him solely of use as a pinch runner. Then again, they have Kemp so I’m wondering what use Fisher is for the Astros.

With Tucker coming onboard as a outfield regular with Reddick and Springer next season, I just don’t see a future for Fisher in Houston. I’m thinking Marisnick will be the 4th outfielder next season. Kemp has the speed and his arm is no worse than Fisher’s plus he can play 2nd base AND he can hit, so he trumps Fisher as a 5th outfielder option. I wish Fisher would get hot with the bat and build up some trade value because I really think he will be gone by opening day 2019.

My operating assumption for the majority of the summer has been that Keuchel walks, Morton comes back and McCullers stays in the rotation. So what if Keuchel walks, Morton walks, and McCullers has to go to the bullpen. That leaves us with Verlander and Cole. Granted we can put McHugh back in the rotation and Peacock as well, but that assumes that we still need at least one and I think most likely two starters. So my guess is that if we build a big lead 7-10 games, then we will see a couple of guys making starts. The first two being Perez and Armenteros. My wager would be on Whitley being a June 19 call up.

Right now the 40-man roster sits at 38, so in order to add all four of those guys 2 more openings would have to be created. Gustave is on the 10-day DL, but as far as I can tell has not thrown a pitch at any level this season. He could easily be transferred to the 60-day DL to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. Then we would need one more opening. My money would be on Guduan or Brady Rodgers being removed from the roster via trade or DFA to open up another spot on the 40-man roster. Luhnow may not be ready to trade or DFA either of those giys just yet. This would be another reason not to call up Whitley in September.

Yep 240, I agree with you on Rodgers. Not so sure about Guduan, they have been keeping him on the 40-man roster for several years now waiting for him to blossom into a ML pitcher. Their patience may run out soon. The fact that he is a lefty buys him more leeway than a righty would get, I’m thinking.

The Astros put Buddy Boshers on waivers recently.., the Pirates claimed him and the Astros let them have him rather than pulling him back. Pirates added him to their 40-man roster and assigned him to their AAA team. I could see him getting called up by the Bucs and helping them in September. Pretty classy move on Luhnow’s part letting the guy go to a team where he could have a legitimate shot at playing in the big league this season, rather than withdrawing him from waivers. Of course this opened a spot on the Astros 40-man roster that will be available for one of our guys in the upper minors to be added to the roster when the team makes its September call ups.

It was nice having Boshers at Fresno for depth... I think he could have been all right in a mop-up role with the Astros. Fortunately, Cionel Perez has started to cement himself nicely, and that of course made Boshers expendable. Luhnow will need that flexibility on the 40-man in the coming weeks.

Here you go, this for Nova
Team: GCL Astros (ROK) ETA: 2021
Position: SS Age: 18 DOB: 01/12/2000
Bats: R Throws: R Height: 6' 1" Weight: 180 lb.
Signed: July 2, 2016 - HOU
Watch
Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 50 | Run: 60 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50
One of the best all-around talents in his international class, Nova reportedly had an agreement to sign with the Marlins for $2.5 million that fell apart when he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in February 2016. After he passed several subsequent drug tests, the Astros signed him for $1.2 million in July. Houston spent a franchise-record $17.5 million on bonuses and penalty tax during the 2016-17 international signing period, and he's the best prospect from that haul.
Nova excited the Astros with both his tools and his performance in various analytic measures of strength, speed and conditioning. He has an effective right-handed swing with bat speed and loft, and he already shows signs of a selective approach. He barrels balls easily and is a rare shortstop who should hit for both average and power, earning comparisons to Hanley Ramirez and Edgar Renteria.
Nova also possesses at least plus speed, making him a threat to steal. He has good instincts on the bases and at shortstop, not to mention quick hands and a strong arm. Though he needs more defensive consistency, he should be able to remain at short and still would profile well offensively if he outgrows the position and slides to third base.

Nova....our best SS prospect. ETA 2021.
Correa eligible for FA in 2022, if Luhnow can’t re-sign him.
I’m really going to be keeping an eye on Nova as he progresses through our minor league system. Part of the genius of Luhnow and his scouting/player development team is, I believe, that they are thinking years down the road and will have a quality prospect ready to step in each year should one of our core players decide to walk off to some team that is dumb enough to offer them a ridiculous contract (note: see Albert Pujols/Angels).

Why can't Correa hit AA pitching? Sigh. I just hope he’s not doing that whole taking strikes and swinging at balls routine. If I had to guess what the problem is, that is what my first guess would be. Hard to hit well when you take the first pitch strike right down the middle (often the second strike too) every at-bat before you take the bat off your shoulder.

To that point a couple of years ago the Astros went way over the International bonus pool limits. That was the year that we signed guys like Nova and Miguelangel Sierra as well as a couple of other guys. My initial thought when they did this was to stack the system with high upside guys who could take Correa's place in the event that he wanted to leave after 6 years.

Seems like Tucker has hit well since heading back to AAA. I think he will be a good MLB level player but needs more time at the AAA level.
