those AAA curve balls and sliders do not have the same bend that they did before he saw what the big boys do. Let me stay on the run for a bit and then bring him back August 31.

Seems like Tucker has hit well since heading back to AAA. I think he will be a good MLB level player but needs more time at the AAA level. I agree; in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he does much better when he is called back up after September 1st. It was good that they sent him back to AAA when they did. He stumbled out of the gate at the ML level. Kinda got knocked back on his heels. May have been questioning his own ability a bit, especially after he was put on the bench and left there for several games before he was sent back down. I feel sure that going back to AAA took a lot of pressure off that he was putting on himself in Houston. Now by playing every day at AAA he has got his mojo back.

Nick Tanielu at Fresno is a guy we might want to keep an eye on as a possible super utility guy in 2019 or 2020. He was drafted in the 14th round of the June 2014 draft. By the fall of 2016 he had made it to AA and the Astros thought enough of him to send him to the Arizona Fall League that fall. He finished second in batting average in the AFL in 2016 at .352...which was .01 behind the league leader and about .30 higher than the guy who finished third...Cody Bellinger. Unfortunately Tanieli injured himself in April 2017 and spent the entire 2017 season on the DL, except for an attempt at a rehab assignment in August in which he played just 2 games..5 ABs and an attempt to play in the Arizona Fall League again and was only able to play 2 games...5 ABs before he was sent home.
In spite of the fact that he missed the 2017 season, the Astros invited him to ST this season where he got into 9 games and got 2 hits in 12 ABs. He started this minor league season at AA Corpus where he batted .287 and was then promoted to AAA in Mid-May after going 11-21 in his last 5 games with the Hooks. He has batted .275 since being promoted to AAA with 5 home runs in 222 ABs. He has really been on a tear lately though. He currently has a 9 game hitting streak going in which he is batting .441 (15-34) with 3 home runs and 4 doubles and has only struck out once.
Tanielu has played 240 games at 3B, 119 at 2B and 21 games at 1B in his minor league career.

yes it all makes sense now, you do not want hitters to get in a groove. Too many runs score, you win too much and it all becomes too boring. Now I understand

And another thing, you can tell that Dawson is an Astros prospect. He goes 4-5 tonight with a home run a double and 2 singles. On the two singles he gets picked off once and gets caught stealing once. yep we got good base running coaches, we start them off early teaching them how to get picked off and caught stealing. That way they do not tire themselves out by having to run all the way around the bases. Afterall if you can not hit at least a double you are not much of a hitter now are you.

If Dawson would comply with the “two true outcomes” approach...hit a bomb or strike out trying...pushed by the organization from rookie league ball in Florida through MLB in Houston, he wouldn’t get picked off and thrown out attempting to steal as often. If you doubt that just check out Myles Straws stats. On June 23 he was hitting .394 and had been caught stealing SEVEN times while striking out just 48 times in almost three months. Since June 23 his batting average has dropped to around .255 and he has struck out 40 times in just a month and a half, BUT he has been caught stealing only ONE time in that month and a half! So there you go! Want to stop the base running blunders? Simple. Strike out or hit a home run. You see..., it’s all right here on the clipboard with the numbers to back it up.

One thing I notice you don’t see much of on this team is runners going from first to third on singles. As hard as it is for them to string across three hits in an inning, you’d figure they’d do it more often. Maybe there’s really not much team speed.

He stole bases in the minor leagues. Did it well in the minor leagues with 88 stolen bases and only caught 16 times. He never steals now. Why? Has he suddenly gotten slower, it would appear not when he is chasing a flyball. So what is it. The answer has to be they never work on it, why would he suddenly go from a guy who steals 85% of the time to someone who gets caught as much as he makes it. Answer, no focus, no studying pitchers moves, no practicing jumps. We have a ton of speed but if you do not practice a skill you lose it.

Also going first to third is another skill we seem to be losing. Springer, Bregman, Altuve, Correa, Kemp, Reddick, and Marisnick are all fast, and Gattis is pretty darn quick for a tree trunk as well.

It’s almost a bad thing that Gattis had that incredible hot streak, because it makes people believe he’s some clutch performer. He’s just not reliable.

He definitely has been writing his ticket out of town. With White hitting the way that he has so far as well as last year he pretty much is cementing the deal to be the dh next year. He also provides positional depth with his ability to play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. It was good we held onto him.

From game played August 12:
AAA - Fresno 9 Albuquerque ((Rockies) 4 Myles Straw CF: 1-4, BA .251....stole 2 bases(23 at AAA)....had 35 stolen bases at AA before being promoted. Why can’t they leave this kid’s swing alone? After he was promoted to AAA in June he had hits in 15 of his first 17 games and did not go consecutive games without a hit. At the end of those first 17 games he was batting .378 with an OBP of .439. Now, after 49 games at AAA, he is batting .251 with an OBP of .339....and those results include the numbers from his first 17 games. What is wrong with having a leadoff batter who gets on base over 40% of the time and steals 60 or more bases a year, but doesn’t hit the home run? Good grief. Garrett Stubbs C: 1-5, 1 2B, BA .315 Jack Mayfield 2B: 1-4, 1 2B, BA .262 AJ Reed DH: 1-4, BA .266 JD Davis RF: 1-4, 1 HR(9), BA .337 Yordan Alvarez LF: 2-3, 1 HR(7), BA .240.....he got promoted and played his first game at AAA on July 6. He started slowly, but is coming around lately. He’s batting .278 (10-36) over his last 10 games with 3 home runs. He has multiple hits in 3 of his last 4 games, going 6-12 with a home run 2 Ks and 2 BBs. We really need this guy to be legit.
