Beer is hot tonight. Just hit a grand slam for Buies Creek in the top of the eighth. Man we are really getting some great pitching tonight at Quad Cities, Buies Creek and Corpus Christi. Fresno game hasn’t started yet. Beer’s home run came off a left handed pitcher. That is a good sign. Beer's pretty strong tonight. 2-5 with 5 rbis Straw with two hits tonight so far Tucker with two hits and his 20 home run Reed with his 100th rbi. Not bad for a fat boy

For Beilak it has to suck to strike out 11 in 6 innings, only give up 3 hits and 1 run and lose the game. Hitters stayed home tonight for the Hooks.

I stopped putting much stock in the W and L stats way back in 1987 when Nolan Ryan pitched some of the best baseball of his career and, because the Astros never scored him any runs, finished the season 8-16. He should have won the Cy Young that year, but the sports writers didn’t have cajones enough to give the award to a guy with a 8-16 won-loss record. Ryan pitched 211.2 innings that year..., struck out 270..., held opponents to a .199 batting average..., had a 2.76 ERA..., and went 8-16...smh. They gave the CY award to Steve Bedrosian instead.

Straw has thrown a runner out at second...his 15th outfield assist of the year. Reed just hit a 2-run home run in the 4th inning...his 26th of the year. His rbi total is up to 102.

For the purposes of evaluating a prospect's potential or their overall performance in the bigs I have stopped using wins and loses as well. I was speaking more from a personal perspective and how frustrating it must be to pitch like that and still lose. I remember that year and Ryan's performance as well. It is hard to believe that anyone could be as snake bit as he was that year.

I remember that year and Ryan's performance as well. It is hard to believe that anyone could be as snake bit as he was that year. The only example that I can remember of an Astros’ pitcher being snake bit in a way that would rival Ryan in ‘87 would be Dave Giusti in 1968. The guy went 11-14 with a 3.19 ERA that year. In 12 of his 14 losses the Astros scored 1 or 0 runs.

From mlb.com article on minor league players who could get a September call up:
“Astros Josh James, RHP, Astros' No. 6 While Forrest Whitley, the game's best pitching prospect, would make more headlines with a callup, James might be a more realistic option. He'll have to be added to the 40-man roster in the offseason (Whitley won't), as he's battling Kopech for the Minor League strikeout lead and his fastball/slider combination could make him a useful October bullpen piece.”

I’m thinking ole Dizzy gets the September call up. I think you are right Don't forget, though, that Luhnow doesn't like to bring guys up just for kicks or just to reward them. He's very stingy with the September passes.

Don't forget, though, that Luhnow doesn't like to bring guys up just for kicks or just to reward them. He's very stingy with the September passes. This is true, but I think all of the players I listed could actually contribute to the team in September..., maybe October too. I am curious to see if Reed gets the call. If he doesn’t, I’m thinking Luhnow has decided to move on from him and will trade him this offseason, if he can find a taker.

I’m not sure what, if any, time limit there is on rehab assignments. I am with you though. With the team finally starting to pull things back together, it seems like a bad time to demote anyone. If it is possible to do so within the rules, I would just leave McCann, Jake and Devo in the minors until September 1st.

They could always claim they had a "setback" in their recovery, and keep them on the DL until 09/01
