So what's next for AJ Reed? He's obviously not quite the same type of headcase as Singleton, but unless he's injured, his .225 avg with only 2 HRs about 73 ABs just doesn't sound rosterable. Not in a farm system where playing time is hard to come by for the players who really do have a future in MLB. It wouldn't surprise me if Reed is released at some point in the next 12 months. If Reed is not a throw-in in some trade before November, I think he will be released NLT the cutoff date for placing prospects on the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. Astros Top 30 prospects Yordan Alvarez, Ronnie Dawson, Abraham Toro, Cristian Javier, Enoli Paredes and Jonathan Arauz will all be eligible for the Rule 5 draft in December, if they are not on the 40-man roster. Other prospects who are not in the Top 30, but are quality prospects the team may want to protect are Ryan Hartman, Brandon Bailey, Colin McKee, Scott Manea, Taylor Jones and Brett Adcock. Some of those guys will probably be traded before November, but Luhnow is going to have to add some of them to the 40-man roster or lose them to the Rule 5. Yep, Reed is gone. He probably isn’t the only one.

One thing I like about Luhnow is that he doesn't waste talent through a waiver just because the fans are down on a player or he determines they are not in the Astros future plans. He usually gets SOMETHING rather than nothing.

Beer went 3-4 with a home run today in his second game at AA. Dawson went 3-4 with a double. Dawson is batting .237 now. It is mid-May now. He should start heating up.
Alvarez went 2-4. He’s batting .413 now. He is batting .485 in May after batting .347 in April. Fisher went 3-5 with a double and is batting .328. Straw went 3-5 and is batting .311. Tucker went 1-4 with a double and is batting .237, but is batting .333 in May.

I'd definitely like to see Fisher get another shot with the big league club before concluding he's useless. The raw power and speed were always there, and he couldn't be hitting AAA pitching much better. There is a decent chance he will be an offensively productive MLB outfielder, so best not to cut him too soon.

We need to package Fisher and a few other guys at AAA along with a top 10 prospect and get a starter. But the fact that we are losing McHugh, Peacock, Rondon, Smith, Miley, Harris, and Cole means we have to get some arms somewhere. We will get back McCullers and Martes next year and Martin seems like he is ready but that still leaves a few holes.

Seth Lugo would be great acquisition, I think he is under 3 more years of control after this season. Stroman would be my third choice, but I an really hoping for the first 2.

I am going on vacation as well from 6-1 to 6-10. I will have some access to the internet as this year I am not going to lake powell for this period. What days are you going to be out of pocket?

No promises on keeping up the level of detail that you provide but I will attempt to keep the highlights flowing. It is ok with me. I will appreciate your help anytime..., not just while I’m on vacation. I was retired, but have gone back to work and don’t have nearly as much time as I did before to keep up with and post about our minor leaguers. I can use all the help I can get.

Alvarez went 1-3 with his 18th home run of the season today. Alvarez is batting .411 for the season. Tucker went 2-4 with a triple. He has his average up to .257 and his OPS is .887. Straw went 1-5 and stole his 14th base today. He has been caught stealing twice.
Bukauskus went 6 innings for Corpus today allowing 4 hits, no walks, 1 earned run and he struck out 6.

Our advanced A team is not really giving us much to cheer about now that Beer has passed through. It seems to me like our farm system below AA is not nearly as strong this year as it has been the last few years. One player who has got my attention lately is Yohan Ramirez at Advanced A. I don’t recall him ever being a highly rated prospect, but he is showing signs of breaking out lately. On 5/7 he struck out 12 and walked 2 in 4.2 innings. On 5/19 he struck out 11 and walked 1 in 6.2 innings. Of course sandwiched between those two starts was a 4 inning, 5 walks outing. For the season he has struck out 57 in 35.2 innings...., but he has also walked 19. In spite of walking 19 in 35.2 innings, his WHIP is just 0.95 so he isn’t allowing many hits. If he could conquer his control issues, maybe he could amount to something one day.

If he could conquer his control issues, maybe he could amount to something one day. I have heard it said on multiple occasions that the stat that is the most accurate predictor of future success is the strikeout to walk to innings pitched ratios. They also say that the biggest difference between pitching in AAA versus AA is that the best hitters in AAA have mastered the hitting of a great fastball if that is all you have. This may partially explain why Whitley's flyball to home run stat looks so bad. That of course and the switch of AAA to major league balls. It also helps to explain the team's insistence on his getting more vertical and horizontal break on his slider and curve.

He is a bit of a mystery. He gets hot as hell and then disappears. If he could find it and keep it he would be a real winner.

I was just looking at the Fayetteville roster and discovered that Nick Hernandez is on their team. He is the UH product who really dominated out of the bullpen at Low A, Full Season A and Advanced A before being promoted to AA and then getting injured. He missed the entire 2018 season. I really had high hopes for him before he got hurt. I will be monitoring his progress this season.

Seth Beer is off to a good start at AA. He went 0-3 in his AA debut game, but has gone 7-10 with a home run in the 3 games since.
Brandon Bielak had a good start for Corpus tonight. 6 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K. After getting off to a slow start, he has his ERA down to 3.75 now.
Alvarez 0-3 tonight. Kyle Tucker 2-2 with 2 walks, no strikeouts and hit his 12th home run. Has his batting average up to .255 for the season. After batting .173 in April, Tucker is now batting .367 in May.

Toro has his season average over 300 now as well. So Tucker with 12 home runs and Alvarez with 16 and Whitley suffering from giving up a crazy amount of home runs per fly ball. How much of this is just juiced balls. Kind of makes you wonder. Having said that Whitley does need to figure out how to keep the ball on the ground. Hard to hit a home run that way.

He is batting .297 in May after batting .195 in April.

It has probably been tough on him not making the team out of ST and then watching his teammate Alvarez outperform him game after game when he is supposed to be the next big thing as far as position players go.
