Alvarez and Tucker both 2-4 with a double today in Round Rock’s regularly scheduled game. Tucker also stole his 9th base. Straw went 2-4. Lorenzo Quintana went 2-4 in his AAA debut.
Quintana is a guy we haven’t talked about much. He is 30 years old. Luhnow signed him out of Cuba in 2017. He played 7 years in Cuba and posted a .310 BA, 816 OPS and threw out 30 % of runners attempting to steal. He was batting .304 at Corpus when he was promoted.

We talked a little about him last year but when he started off hitting so poorly he kind of fell of the radar. Good he is doing so well this year. Also good to see Alvarez break out of his slump maybe, Tucker keep on keeping on and Straw still hitting well this year.

Joshua Rojas is red hot right now for Corpus. In his last 10 games he is 22-44 (.500) with more than twice as many home runs (7) as strike outs (3) and he has walked 6 times. I was thinking Toro would be next up to AAA, but if Altuve’s stay on the IL continues and Mayfield remains in Houston, it may be Rojas who gets the call to Round Rock because he can play 1B, 2B, 3B, LF and RF.

Back then it was really valued to be able to play both infield and outfield. So many players would have graded as at least a 40 at 5 different positions.

Wow. Joshua Rojas didn’t enter the game until the bottom of the fourth and didn’t get his first at-bat until the top of the sixth, but he now has a single, double, triple and walk in his first four plate appearances at AAA.

Looks like Alvarez is starting to heat back up again with a 3-6 night last night. No home runs but 3 hits looks good.

I was surprised to see Tucker with a bad game with a 13-12 final score.

The team had 22 hits so realistically he should of had more than just 1 hit in 7 at bats.

Astros #6 prospect Freudis Nova was assigned to Full Season A Quad Cities on May 25. I’m going to keep an eye on him. He is 19 years old and right now looks like the most likely replacement for Correa should he decide to walk when he becomes a free agent.

Some interesting notes:
Round Rock was shutout last night as all of their top offensive performers were in Houston. sk Tucker did get a double though, Alvarez got a walk, and Rojas got a hit.
Beer is hitting over 300 as a pro and is currently hitting 333 at CC in 48 at bats.
Nova seems to be playing more 3rd base at QC than at SS. He is hitting close to 300 so far and hit his second home run last night.
Pitching seems to have fallen off a cliff this year. Last year we had solid pitching performances everywhere. This year they are hard to find at any level.

He is hitting close to 300 so far and hit his second home run last night. Pitching seems to have fallen off a cliff this year. Last year we had solid pitching performances everywhere. This year they are hard to find at any level. Jeremy Pena, the Astros #25 prospect, is also on the QC roster and had been playing SS for the River Bandits all season prior to Nova’s arrival on May 25. Here is what MLB.com has to say about Pena: “Pena is the top defender among shortstops in the Houston system. His quick first step and smooth actions give him plenty of range, and he has a plus arm to make all of the necessary throws. His tools will allow him to play anywhere in the infield and serve as a utilityman if he doesn't hit enough to become an everyday player. Pena makes regular contact to all fields and has a patient approach. He has the strength to do some damage at the plate but has made little offensive impact with wood bats in college summer leagues or as a pro, so the Astros are working with him to try to unlock some power in his right-handed swing. He has solid speed and an aggressive nature on the bases.” Apparently Pena is considered the better glove man of the two and right now seems to be making the adjustment to the wood bats well. He was batting around .300 with 4 home runs so far the last time I checked. That could explain why they are not playing Nova at SS just yet. As to the farm-wide pitching slump...., I seem to recall that when Luhnow took over he put into place a system whereby the “Astros way” of doing things would be implemented at every level so that the minor leaguers were being taught and employ the same techniques at every level as they progress through the minor leagues. I’m wondering if a decision was made to try and teach our up and coming pitchers at every level a new pitch or a different way of doing things. Whatever is going on doesn’t appear to be working well right now.

Nova may not be playing 3B much longer while Pena plays SS at Quad Cities. AA Corpus is pretty weak at SS and Jonathan Arauz is on a 13-game hitting streak at Fayetteville. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Arauz get promoted to AA and Pena... who is on a 12-game hitting streak..., promoted to Advanced A Fayetteville which would create an opening for Nova to play SS full-time at Quad Cities.

Round Rock is batting in the 8th inning. Alvarez is 0-2, but has been intentionally walked twice. Seems like he is getting a lot of IBBs lately. Quintana has homered twice. He is batting .385 since being promoted to AAA. We may have to start considering the possibility of a Stubbs/Quintana platoon at catcher for the Astros next season. Tucker is 1-5 with a single after which he stole second and third base. Joshua Rojas is 1-3 with a double and a stolen base.. Batting .500 since being promoted to AAA.

After appearing in 5 games at Advanced A, Nick Hernandez has been promoted to AA. He is in the game for Corpus Christi right now. I am hoping he can return to the level he was pitching at before he was injured. If he can, I think he can help the Astros bullpen as soon as next season.

We’ve got a kid at Advanced A who may be worth keeping an eye on. Brett Conine, RHP. He pitched 6 innings of shutout ball today, striking out 12 and walking just one. For the season he has pitched 19.1 innings, allowed 3 earned runs, struck out 32 and walked just 2. Not bad.

Through 4 innings in today’s game Iowa Cubs pitchers have intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez 2 times. They pitched to him once and he hit his 21st home run of the year.
