After spending the first two months of the season on a tear that had him batting over .400 as recently as 3 weeks ago, Alvarez is 4-25 with 10 strikeouts in his last 7 games. Seems like Bregman had gone into a similar slump by the time he was called up. I’m hoping for a better start at the ML level for Alvarez than Bregman had in his first 40 or so at-bats.

If we just temper our expectations, I think he’ll be great. Maybe the slump was due to the Bonds treatment where he was losing focus due to the walks he was racking up. I’m glad he’s getting a shot now because the Encarnación rumors bother me. |

Protected by Chirinos. I guess they don't expect him to have any problem with MLB pitching starting him 5th in the lineup. Or does he offer protection for Gurriel? |

I'm not so sure about that. without Mayfield, Bregman moves to SS and that only leaves an inexperienced Straw as backup. Then Gurriel moved to 3B and he's not a stud at that position and he's not hitting well this season either. This changes with the return of Diaz, but I suspect Mayfield has a long leash until then.
I'd really like to see Alvarez work hard on his fielding at 1B, ala Bagwell, who became a 1B only because we already had a 3B or Biggio, who became an excellent 2B to exiend his career after being an all star catcher. Inexperience does not mean incompetence. I like having a tall 1B with a huge wing span if he can get the footwork down.

We have three guys besides Mayfield who IMO are a wasted 40-man roster spot....Guduan, Reed and Brady Rodgers. If Altuve and Diaz aren’t back soon, I would like to see one of those guys (Guduan, Reed or Rodgers) removed from the 40-man roster, White exiled and Tanielu called up.

I hope my streaming problems are over. Last night my computer kept shutting down for just long enough to interrupt the streaming and shut my computer down. It takes about half an inning for me to reboot and getting the live stream back is excruciatingly slow.
