Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed. That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind. In my opinion, Apollo (all missions but particularly Apollo 11 and 13) were the greatest peacetime adventures mankind embarked upon during the 20th century. Of course, there are somewhere between 5~20% of the current population who believe Apollo was a hoax and NASA faked the the lunar landings.

Exceptional men doing exceptional things for an exceptional nation.

Refugees who probably think the moon landing was a hoax: Does VooDoo belong on that list? Corch probably doesn't. But he's senile so he might not even remember it happened.

I was 12 and sprawled out on the floor in front of our brand new fangled color TEEE VEEEE. I was a sci-fi junkie even back then, so I was really stroked about it.

It is amazing that we landed on the moon. My 15 year old son asked today if we actually did it. Do they even teach this stuff in school anymore?

I think it was somethng like $500 or $600 ....which was quite a wad back then. Tv's back then had to warm up after you turned them on. Usually took a few minutes. I also remember how many times TV's used to go out. I mean any time a tube or thermistor or whatever fritzed, it was to the repairman. No comparisons to TV's today, whch are for the most part disposable after they croak.

The Berkeley thing in the news was what prompted my response. They can no longer say brothers and sisters, instead: siblings. Even he and she are out, replaced with 'they' even when speaking of a single person.
If Spanish ever becomes a second official language in the US, they'll have a serious problem on their hands. Many inanimate objects have an implied gender.

No comparisons to TV's today, whch are for the most part disposable after they croak. Back then MTBF was short and the price of a new unit of similar size stayed fairly constant. Advances in manufacturing technology makes the value of a unit drop rapidly since larger units become available at lower prices. A large part of the cost of a television was in the wood cabinetry. Now that's just plastic.
Plus, the cost of many repairs was quite reasonable. Identifying a faulty tube was relatively easy and replacement was as simple as yanking out the old tube and inserting a new one. No soldering was required.

I miss the 70s. My motto is "take me back, and leave me there." I'd like to go back and live my life from the late 40s through the late 90s. Though we had no technology to speak of, the world was a quantifiably better place to live (for an American).
The way things were, in small-town east texas during the 60s-80s is now, in my mind, an idyllic time. Man, I miss it.
