Man I hate losing games like that. You get paid to swing the bat anybody can stand there and watch them.

I wish I knew WHY Hinch pulled Peacock when he had only gone two innings. Peacock is the guy who can go 3-4. Peacock comes out, Smith comes in and blows the game. I have yet to be impressed with Smith. Morton was due to be off and it happened tonight. I am not worried about him. We are still taking too many called third strikes. Fisher hit a big home run but you cannot take strike three with the tying run on base in the 9th.
Somebody tell Altuve he is not hitting at home that we are still on the road.

Fisher’s game was like a minor version of Correa’s ALDS Game 4 back in ‘15. Both hit homers and kept us in the game but both did things to cost us the win. For Correa then, it was the glove. For Fisher, it was needing just to make contact to tie the game and failing.

At least Smith knows he was horrible......he just said he "sucked" and I totally agree.

Smith has been a very good, very reliable, very consistent reliever. So far for us he has been a waste of roster space. Perhaps he will straighten out before the All Star break and become the guy we thought we had signed.

Some positives in the early pitch data for Smith are that:
- he's generating swings and misses 11.5% of the time he throws a pitch, which is the highest rate in his career - while the velocity on his FB is down about 1 mph compared to last year, it has much more movement and is "graded" as a 5.93 pitch (compared to only .0.28 for his career). I think this basically means it has more deceptive movement than before.
However, the big knock on Smith this year is that his slider has fallen apart. It doesn't dart and dive to the extent it should. It was graded at a 3.15 pitch last year, but this year is only 0.80.
He's throwing his fastball only about half as much as he did last year... this of course being Astros philosophy... but as his FB is his dominant pitch, it might make sense for him to go against the grain of the team's breaking pitch philosophy.

Smith comes in and blows the game. I have yet to be impressed with Smith. Until 3 consecutive outings of redemption, I suggest a proclamation that he now be known as "BLOW JOE" among these parts

A lot of guys who need a lot of movement to be successful seem to be having trouble this year. Sliders specifically seem to not be sliding.

thinking about our guys, Giles slider lacks movement, Peacock's slider lacks movement, McCullers knuckle curve lacks movement.

The game was lost when Peacock was pulled and Smith brought in......Smith had no movement on any pitch. Altuve looked clueless at the plate and went 0-5 which is unusual for him.

thinking about our guys, Giles slider lacks movement, Peacock's slider lacks movement, McCullers knuckle curve lacks movement. Why doesn’t this trend seem to affect the opposing team’s pitchers? People seem to throw junk out of the zone and get outs on our hitters routinely.

So far home runs are down from year to year but strike outs are up so there is obviously some variation that has occurred. If the seams are different the same grip gets a different result. Some or our guys still need to figure out the adjustments. Our guys do not have the same eye of the tiger that they had last year. My guess is that if we hit a rough patch early (prolonged like August) our guys will come around and lock in longer term.

Of course maybe this is just normal regression. Gonzales, Reddick, and Marisnick all had their best year last year.

The Astros bullpen has so far held opponents to a .207 average, which is quite a bit better than the MLB relief pitching median of .243. The only teams whose bullpens have held opponents to lower averages are the Padres, DBacks, Brewers, and Red Sox.
It's just to say that the other 25 teams probably have their own fans noticing the times the bullpen fails to get key outs and wondering why their pitcher can't get his slider across effectively or whatever.
The Astros bullpen ins 3rd in MLB in the disparity between strikeouts and walks (K-BB%) at 19.8%. Only the INdians and Yankees relievers are doing better at getting strikeouts and avoiding walks.

Too many blown chances at the plate and by Smith. We should have had that win yesterday. I bet Altuve gets a day off today after that trash heap of a game yesterday. Hopefully Verlander is dominant so we can eek out a win and retake 1st place.

Smith is side arm dealer, if he hangs anything in the strike zone it is going to be nailed. His pitches are usually on the same plane, he did spin off a nice one to Trout and had him fishing.

With a man on third base and less than 2 outs, I have more faith in a squeeze play than our guys getting a hit.

Last season AJ took a page out of the Maddon play book and did the safety squeeze and it worked a few times. I am with you a little small ball would be nice.
