More stupidity from the halls of the COB.... deadspin.com/report-mlb-proposal-would-wipe-out-a-quarter-of-all-mi-1839178218<snipit> Major League Baseball is currently negotiating a new Professional Baseball Agreement (PBA) with Minor League Baseball, which operates as a sprawling feeder system and training pipeline for the big leagues. If MLB has their way, MiLB will undergo massive restructuring, including the possible elimination of a quarter of all minor league teams from around the country. Baseball America, which reported MLB’s restructuring proposal, makes clear that this is from the early stages of what promises to be a long and difficult process, which reportedly started with the two sides “further apart than they have been in any PBA negotiation since 1990.” MLB deputy commissioner Doug Halem told Baseball America that the sides are still “presenting ... the issues and concerns they have with the existing PBA,” and outlined the fit-for-public-consumption portion of MLB’s stance: ============================================================================================================= I think part of the alternate intent is to try to raise MILB salaries, but how better to cook the golden goose and kill regional interest in a sport that is already in a death spiral. The people who run this game can't be any more stupid.

They always find a way to out stupid the previous generation. And add utter greed to that stupidity too Marshall. I have an absolutley simple solution that would fix this problem with MILB once and for all. Just invoke a simple 1% MILB surcharge to MLB revenues (Owners part), and a 1% Player's surcharge. Beleive me.... with what these both these parties make, it won't be missed. Here is the math.... 5800 minor league players MLB revenues (latest data I could find)- $10.3B Total Player Salaries- $4.1B $14.4B X 1% = $144M total pool for MILB players $144M divided by 5800 players = $26,500 per player. Add this across the board to the existing graduated pay.... Rookie up to AAA. It's well documented that these guys can't have a union, but MLB players turning their back on a plight 90+% had to deal with, is sad sad, sad. And the owners? Chopping 25% of MILB teams and players is going to blow back in their face 10 fold.

It truly is insane how little these guys make in the minor leagues. Whatever methodology you use to get these guys more money makes sense to me. A pay scale that increases on a steeper plane than the current one makes a lot of sense to me as well. Guys that make it to Double A should get a large bump and guys who make it to Triple A should get another large bump and guys who make it to the 40 man roster should get another one. When a guy gets to AAA he should be making a solid wage but let's face it, that wage should not be something that someone looks at and says man I need to keep this gig as long as I can. Seeing someone at 30 in AAA is just sad. At some point you got to give up the ghost.

My solution is to eliminate the Baseball exemption from federal anti-trust statutes and associated privileges.
Second, require all employees, whether temporary or part time, to be paid at the same rate as full time employees with pro rata benefits so there is no longer financial benefit to employers to distribute employment to sub minimum wage categories while preserving the ability to add temporary workers when called for. That is universal, but would apply to minor league teams as well. The market would determine the consequences and not some back room deal with MLB.
