But, I can almost guarantee that the drunk kid was baited into that rant. He had no other plausible reason to do randomly say anything like what he did. My guess is the the context was very different than just the plain text.
And, yes, free speech is alive and well and also had no basis for his firing. He was an Astros employee, wearing Astros gear and in the Astros locker room. He was representing the organization and not just himself. I have 0 problem with his firing. It was crass and pointless. I teach my young kids to always ask yourself this question before you speak or act, “is it worth it?”.

He should be reprimanded according to their disciplinary policy for the one instance. The other should have no relevance at all. Also, you haven't defined what telling your coworker that you support a certain player is considered. If you can't define exactly what it is, how can you reprimand someone for it? |

While he's at work his speech is subject to employer standards, and to some degree afterwards. He was a representative of the Houston Astros, and as such he should have kept his speech and behavior professional. He didn't and paid the price. That's all.
