Farm Alert!!! The ground finally dried up enough that I could break up my garden spot and plant a small garden this weekend. I planted five 60’ long rows of purple hull peas; 33 hills of okra; 6 hills of watermelons; 1 hill of cantaloupe; 7 hills of cucumbers; 2 zucchini; 3 yellow squash; 1 broccoli plant; 27 tomato plants and 26 pepper plants. That’s all Ol Papa has to report from the farm. What does "hill" signify?

In the case of the watermelons and cantaloupe it is actually a mound of dirt mixed with compost about 4” high and 30” diameter on which a group of 4-6 seeds are planted. The other stuff I don’t actually build up a hill to plant them on. I plant them in rows in groups of 3 seeds with the groups spaced approximately 24” - 36” apart along a row. In the case of the okra, cucumbers, zucchini and squash I just used the word “hill” to describe the 3-seed groupings.

I’m hoping to have better luck with the melons this year. If I can keep the coons from getting all of them, I’ll bring you at least one.

I’m hoping to have better luck with the melons this year. If I can keep the coons from getting all of them, I’ll bring you at least one. Things That Sound Racist, But Are (Probably) Not. Nope. Not racist. Year before last a pack of raccoons moved in and laid claim to my melon patch. They ate every cantaloupe I raised that year and some of the watermelons. I didn’t even bother to plant any melons last year. I haven’t seen any sign of coons in the neighborhood lately. So I planted some melons again this year and am hoping for the best.

Prospects looking good on the farm. I applied fertilizer to the whole garden and staked and tied the tomato plants Saturday ahead of the rain God sent on Sunday. I gave the garden a good tilling this afternoon. Tomatoes, peppers, purple hull peas, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, watermelon, cantaloupes and okra all healthy, insect and disease free, and progressing well.

I wish I had easy access to some Jacksonville tomatoes or some beefsteak tomatoes. Down here, most of our produce is from Mexico and subpar.

I had no idea you were a farmer there olpapa. I have about 2-4" of top soil naturally around my place. I do have a green house though and grow a bunch of stuff in there. I had some tomato plants a few years ago that grew to be about 10' tall by attaching them to two rows of horse fence. Over the course of two years the plants grew together and they produced fruit that was shaped like a Roma, tasted like a cherry tomato and have the texture of a beefsteak. Those three plants produced about 20 tomatoes a day for about 3 months twice a year. I got mellee bugs in there though and had to abandon it for a few years til they died off.
I am in the middle of an experiment to see if I can grow fruit trees in elevated planters that are 4' high, and 6'x6' and are filled with expensive top soil. I have a Harvester peach tree that is now three years old and has about 500 peaches on it that should start to ripen in about 3 weeks. I also have two June golds, two red skinned peaches, and a Sam Houston. The Harvester though is the most productive, while the June golds are the best tasting. I also have two pear trees, two Santa Rosa plums and two figs. Kind of a fun thing to do while waiting for the world to change.
