Now that's retired, what do people think? By typical NFL standards, no.

You can’t even compare the two. Actually you kind of can. Sure, the game style was different back when Marino played, but he was basically the same kind of QB that we have now with high passing volume. Marino: 59.4% 420 TD 61361 Yards 86.4 Rating 9 Pro Bowl (8-10 Postseason) Rivers: 64.9% 421 TD 63440 Yards 95.2 Rating 8 Pro Bowl (5-7 Postseason) Rivers: 5th All-Time Passing Yards 5th All-Time Passing TDs 12th All-Time Passer Rating Those are pretty lofty marks.

You can’t even compare the two. No, you can't. Marino was clearly better in spite of the great stats Saint dug up. Ask the players who played with them. Marino was respected and well-liked. Rivers is pretty much an asshole.

Yes, eventually he'll be in the HOF.

Rivers is pretty much an asshole. That's just not true at all. A number of players have already come out and said how much they liked and respected Rivers, including JJ. In any case, being well-liked doesn't matter at all when it comes to talent and production. I'm not saying Rivers is better. I'm just saying that they aren't as far as off as people might think.

JJ has never been a teammate of Rivers. I guess I saw a lot more of Marino's games than Rivers. He has been a good quarterback, and, like Marino, never won a Super Bowl. There are a lot of good ones who never won a Super Bowl. I just never cared for Rivers and he never seemed to play well when I watched him. I can't stand Aaron Rodgers but he is a premier QB who will end up in the HOF. There aren't many the quality of Tom Brady who I don't care for as a person but no QB has won more titles and he may win another one.

It would look pretty silly if Dan Fouts made the HOF and Philip Rivers didn't

Quarterbacks attempt more passes than they did 30 years ago because of the way the game's played now, but HOF standards are higher for QBs Eli Manning will probably be the only inductee of his generation who didn't throw for 60,000 yards
