The Astros have had more of their share of bad umpiring in their games this season, but, from what I have seen, it has become a crisis. We have more umpires the quality of Angel Hernandez and CB Bucknor. Too many young umpires is part of the problem. We had what appeared to be biased umpiriing in our series with the Yankees, and, have the same crew when we come home for this series. I don't know what type of rating system is used, but, these guys are having a negative effect on too many games.
They are particularly weak on balls and strikes. Prime example being the third strike called on Bregman today which was not even close to the zone. Yordan has had numerous outside pitches on him called strikes. I think the umpires in NY were intimidated by the fans and we got screwed on several calls for that reason. In the game we won, the Yankees were screaming about bad calls. LOL
Manfred and league office needs to do something to try to improve the quality of umpires. Guys like Hernandez, Bucknor, and this new guy Nava are terrible. Hernandez will start whining about racism again if he is demoted.

When I first heard of the idea of balls and strikes being called electronically I was totally against it. After observing the terrible umpiring over the past few years, I have changed my mind. I would have no problem with balls and strikes being called electronically. One thing that I think you will see if MLB ever goes to electronic balls and strikes calls is that a lot more of the pitches that are at the top of the strike zone will be called strikes. As things are now you seldom see an umpire call a strike on a pitch that is in the top 3 - 4 inches of the legitimate strike zone.

The umpiring has been getting worse on an annual basis, but, what we see now is the worst. Some of these calls they miss are not even close. That third called strike on Bregman has to be the worst ball-strike call I've seen in years. Any umpire who is that bad, needs to go.

Is the umpiring really worse, or are all the slow motion cameras and strikezone boxes on TV making them look worse?

Is the umpiring really worse, or are all the slow motion cameras and strikezone boxes on TV making them look worse? In my opinion, *maybe* a little of the former and a whole lot of the latter. Granted, I have no love for Hernandez or Bucknor but there have always been complaints about baseball umpires for as long as the game existed. Seriously, I think it's amazing we can find anyone willing to take the abuse an umpire receives, for the meager salaries they get. Of course there have been a few umpires who remain calm and collected in the face of abusive behavior. I'll forever be a fan of Bill Haller.
As far as computerized strikezones, I say 'eff that'. The job of a pitcher is to figure out where a particular umpire is more generous with his called strikes and exploit that area. Hitters simply need to adapt and spoil off the pitches that will be called strike but are too tough to hit. It's always been that way and that part of the game should never be changed. If an umpire consistently calls in favor of one team over the other, that's a problem. But most often, it's case one pitcher being smart enough to exploit what the ump is calling and the opposing pitcher being unable to do the same.

They don't make them like Earl, Billy Martin, or Leo Durocher anymore and that's too bad. They were good for the game. They weren't lazy like Dusty Baker whos sits and scratches his ass instead of having his players' backs when they are getting screwed over by plate umpires. Some of this crap the Astros are seeing is due to the cheating scandal. The stuff that went on in NY is because umpires were intimidated by Yankee fans, and, I wouldn't rule out the umpires being told from the commissioner's office to stick to the Astros. Our pitchers have been squeezed and our hitters have had wider strike zones than the opposition at times.

They're average salary is $235,000, plus I assume room and board covered during the season.

Back on topic: Salary for an umpire at the major league level is very good but to get there you have to pay your dues with decades of service in the minors. So averaged over a lifetime, an umpire is poorly paid.

So averaged over a lifetime, an umpire is poorly paid. There are some in their early 30's. Umpires are better paid than their counterparts in the other big sports, I believe. I'm not saying it isn't a hard job, but if I could go back in time I'd happily spend a decade in the minor leagues in my 20's in order to be making even just $80-100K in my 30's as a MLB umpire.

My wife and I were so broke while I was in school that we would rent a VCR and 2-3 movies (certainly couldn't afford to buy one). We also rented a 2BR house built in the 20's with some sketchy neighbors. It had a big fireplace in one bedroom that wasn't functional, but allowed a massive draft of cold air around it because it had actually separated from the exterior wall. Foam in a can became my friend. Plus she had a great bod, so I didn't suffer too much. That woman had guts to marry me.
