Anthony Castrovince has, this week, named the Astros the top offense in baseball, the top rotation in baseball, and top 3 bullpen.

I wonder if the bp ranking was done before Sipp grabbed the last spot.

Well the Astros did finish first in MLB spring training in ERA (3.38), home runs allowed (19), and strikeouts (324).

Astros catchers threw out 47% of base stealers, good for 2nd in MLB behind Tampa Bay.

And Astros hitters were first in MLB in ground ball avoidance

That is all great but I still don't trust Giles to close games. I hope that changes

Hmmmmmmm...... I must have really overestimated the bottom 27 teams. Just don't see it. Yeah, I don't see it either....All the Astros relievers are good, with exception of Sipp, but there is not one of them, where I am thinking the Astros have sealed the lead or win, when they come to the mound...I would think the Astros would project lower in bullpen ranking, if the ranking were based on primary setup pitcher and closer (8th and 9th).

I guess they think they need the token. If that's it, they should have kept Maybin

I would think the Astros would project lower in bullpen ranking, if the ranking were based on primary setup pitcher and closer (8th and 9th). I'm not so sure about that. I remember posting right before the old message boards were nuked that Giles is currently 2nd only to Jansen in terms of projected WAR among closers (ZiPS). The grass is always greener on the other side when it comes to late-game relievers.

If you look at the zips projections ALL Houston relievers are projected to have under a 4.00 era. Giles comes in with the lowest projection at 2.91. So no really top-top guys but no slugs either. Composite era projected to be slightly under 3.5. Starters are also projected to all be under 4.00. If it proves out to be this good, look out.

Understand the stats, but why does it seem we were holding our breath every time a reliever was brought in last year.

In today's game against the Brewers, the only 2 pitchers they had who *might* improve the Astros bullpen are Josh Hader and Corey Knebel. Neither are available right now but it's just to say that other than the Yankees, Indians, and Rockies, every team's bullpen has some serious question marks. Sipp isn't that much of a handicap because if he starts losing too many games for the Astros, he will be replaced, probably by one of Paulino, McCurry, or Hoyt. If Sipp isn't causing the Astros to lose games, then great, no harm no foul.

because no one gives us a warm fuzzy when they come in. Everyone is ok to good, no one is great, no one is a lock down sure thing

Has any Astros relief pitcher ever been considered lock-down, a sure thing? Maybe Wagner, Lidge, or Dave Smith in their primes? It can't be a long list. Even Kenley Jansen couldn't get the job done in the World Series.

The Joe Smith and Hector Rondon signings were huge this offseason. Those 2 will significantly limit runs in the 6th to 8th innings in comparison with last year's relievers.

Only 5 relievers last season posted an xFIP of 2.50 or lower. That's pretty elite or "lock-down". Those were Kenley Jansen, Craig Kimbrel, Chad Green, Ryan Madson, and the Astros' own Joe Smith.

The 3 best relievers who might actually be available in trade this year are Roberto Osuna (Blue Jays), Brad Hand (Padres), and Felipe Rivero (Pirates). However the price would be high; those teams would want a Kyle Tucker or Forrest Whitley kind of guy in return. But if Harris, J Smith, and Giles aren't making Astros fans feel comfortable with a thin lead late in a game, I can't imagine what other relievers besides Osuna/Hand/Rivero would.

Understand the stats, but why does it seem we were holding our breath every time a reliever was brought in last year. I think that's the nature of relievers, especially closers. Every pitcher has bad days, and in a close game that makes it inherently stressful to watch. I started lurking around the old board around 2006 and I can't think of a time when the board wasn't bashing at least one guy in the bullpen. The saga of Lidge is well known, but folks forget that poor Chad "No Balls" Qualls caught plenty of flack too during his first stint. Valverde and Gregerson were sometimes bashed while they were handling 9th inning duties, and in recent years even Harris seemed to attract somewhat regular criticism (looking at you, Union). Either the team has had a cursed bullpen over the last 10+ years or it's just the nature of the job. I'm guessing it's the latter.
