Texas recognized it 40 years ago. Texas: Setting trends before trends were cool. I found over the years that most people outside of certain areas of Texas don't really even know it exists. When I lived in east Texas (high black population) it was common knowledge. When I moved to the Rio Grande Valley (almost all mexican), no one had ever heard of it. So basically, it's known wherever there is a black segment of population in the state, but not otherwise. Most people never heard of General Granger, and most don't know that we still had battles down here in south Texas a while after the armistice. (Palmito Ranch was the last battle of the war)
