So sorry to hear of JR's death. A stroke kept him from having a career that could have made him one of the greatest pitchers of all time. I remember watching him dominate the Dodgers on several occasions.
RIP James Rodney.

My favorite in the 70's. Most intimidating pitcher I ever saw. 100 mph fastball or 92 mph slider. Pick your poison. RIP.

When the Astros could start JR and Nolan Ryan in a three game series with Joe Niekro's Knuckleball in the middle, the opposition had nightmares. He was the most intimidating right-hander, along with Bob Gibson, that I ever saw. 100 Mph on the fastball up in the zone combined with a slider that could hit 95 breaking down in the zone often made him unhittable. If not for the stroke, there is no telling what he could have accomplished.

He absolutely owned the Dodgers. For that reason alone he was one of my all-time favorite Astros.
I remember when JR was complaining about his arm before he suffered the stroke. I never understood the suggestions that he was dogging it. IIRC he had a 10-3 record and pitched for the NL All-Star team shortly before the stroke. Dogging it? Really?
Hard to believe that a massive blockage in a carotid artery could be overlooked.

Enos Cabel thinks it wasn't paid attention to because of him being blaq Probably had something to do with the club being ticked at him and others for partying too much and snorting too much cocaine. I knew a guy who worked for the Astros in the late 70's. He claimed that bunch was high all the time.

I saw a graphic of Richard with 8 straight CG starts: first four were 1 run apiece and the next were shutouts. That’s 72 innings of hard work. Fast forward to now, our 1B slept wrong and missed a couple marquee games and is now on the IL.
