On September 1 rosters can expand to 28 players. In addition to those 28, each team can carry a taxi squad of up to 5 players to cover for injuries or a Covid outbreak.
Assuming that all of these players are healthy, these are the players I would carry on the 28-player roster in September:
Pedro Baez Luis Garcia Yimi Garcia Kendall Graveman Zach Greinke Josh James Christian Javier Phil Maton Lance McCullers Jake Odorizzi Ryan Pressley Blake Taylor Jose Urquidy Framber Valdez
Jason Castro Martin Maldonado
Jose Altuve Alex Bregman Carlos Correa Aledmys Diaz Yuli Gurriel Taylor Jones Jacob Wilson
Michael Brantley Chas McCormick Jake Meyers Kyle Tucker Yordan Alvarez
I would carry these players on the taxi squad:
Bryan Abreu Rafael Montero Garrett Stubbs Andre Scrubb
What do you guys think? Who would you carry in September?

They might decided on three catchers and keep Stubbs. I see nothing wrong with your list the way it is. Don't be surprised if they want to keep Raley and that is a horrible idea.

I’m beginning to wonder if maybe Garrett Stubbs will be added to the roster on September 1. He has played 2B for Sugarland in their last 3 games. If he is included in the 28-player active roster he could catch a few games in September and in a pinch play some on the infield ad well.

If Bregman comes back we will have Diaz and Wilson as utility infielders. Probably no need for Stubbs. I could see another outfielder though due to Mike's ankle and Yordan's not so good defense.

We need the expanded roster to include depth on the bench. We don't need 15 pitchers and carry a 3-4 man bench. Dusty won't use Stubbs so I see no need to bring him up.

We certainly need depth in the infield because we never know when little Alex may have a "boo boo" and be out of the lineup.

God, you say the stupidest shit. You pretend to be a corch, but don't understand how difficult it is to recover from hamstring/quad injuries.

A strong case can be made for both of these players. But we need to see them (and Jake Meyers) getting sufficient playing time. Some will bitch and moan about that decreasing the chances of having the best record and therefore HFA in the postseason. While HFA is nice, I think the crucial factors are getting/keeping your core players healthy and reasonably rested, and having your reserves performing well.

I agree with you on the pen. Now should the team decide to try and give a break to some of the starting pitchers prior to the playoffs and they called up Solomon to make a start here and there in September, that would make sense to me. Solomon has come on strong since mid-July. In 4 of 6 starts he has gone 5 - 7 innings and allowed 2 or less earned runs. In those 4 starts he has struck out 32 and walked 5 in 24 IP while allowing just 9 hits. For the record, I think Solomon makes the 2022 opening day roster and would not be at all surprised to see him in the starting rotation.

Stubbs started and played at 2B last night for the 5th consecutive game. He has played C and LF in the majors and C, LF and 2B in the minors. I’m wondering if the team has intentions of making him one of the September call ups in order to give Maldonado a break or if they are just trying to add to his resume in anticipation of trading him this offseason.

If Garrett can step up his game at the plate and at least get close to league average, having a utility man who can also catch would have considerable value. fwiw, Maldonado is FA this winter.

I had forgotten Maldonado was a FA after this season. OMG. That likely means we will see a lot more of Castro and his looks of disbelief at being called out after taking a called third strike thrown right down the middle of the zone next season.

Odd one, this. The Astros contract page on BBref also shows him as FA this winter. So apparently there is more than one site with the wrong information. News articles from Apr 21 indicate an agreement was reached. mlb.nbcsports.com/2021/04/21/martin-maldonado-astros-agree-to-contract-for-2022/
