The Astros have several notable players in the last years of their contract, thus FAs. www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/houston-astros/It lists Maldonado as a free agent, but I think it has been pointed out here, he's already vested for the next season. And even if he wasn't, I'm sure he's going to be the catcher next year. Of the other remaining Astros pending free agents, which ones do you hope they keep? Tier 1 - Re-sign at all costs Verlander, of course, 3 years/120M, could just be the minimum offer to be competitive with other possible suitors. Tier 2 - Astros should try to be aggressive to sign Tier 3 - Astros should try to keep, but there are other teams' FA they could also be considering 1. Mancini 2. Montero 3. Diaz 4. Brantley 5. Vazquez Tier 4 - if they re-sign at very team friendly deal 1. Brantley - to me fits this category as well as #3, b/c of age and present injury 2. Yuli The Final Category www.google.com/search?q=youtube+snl+buh+bye&oq=youtube+snl+buh&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i512j0i22i30l2.6000j0j4&client=ms-android-verizon&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:b4c51421,vid:wg5lIpQkoOg,st:0 1. Goodrum 2. Castro 3. Will Smith

Off-season 8/7/22 wish list. This can of course change, but it's based off present day.
1. Verlander - 3 years/120M 2. Josh Bell - 5 years/125M, player opt outafter 2 seasons 3. Brantley - 1 year $8M/ with a 2nd year $8M club option 4. Chafin, Givens, Hand or Britton
Yuli - becomes a part of the coaching staff. If not, re-signs for a very team friendly deal
Dubon takes over A Diaz spot as super utility player
Leon, Brown, Yanier, Diaz and Lee get promoted... And get significant playing time next season. Hopefully some of them excel so well they become starters.
Altuve -2B Brantley - LF Bregman - 3B Alvarez - DH Bell - 1B Tucker - RF Pena - SS Maldonado - C (It is what it is) - but hopefully he starts less than 50% of the time Leon - CF (any output position plus utility IF)
Bench Chas -primary backup for LF and CF Y Diaz - Catcher/super utility Dubon Super utility Lee - Catcher
? Marks Meyers - better offensively than Dubon, but can't play as many as positions. Do the Astros re-sign Yuli to a very team-friendly deal.

Tier 1. Verlander- Just because he is the second coming of Nolan Ryan does not mean that we should make the same mistake we made with Ryan.
Tier 2 Mancini - If what I read about this guy is true then we should go over market to keep him.
Tier 3 Montero- I think he has figured it out again. Vasquez- He wants to go back to the Red Sox so I doubt we keep him but if he starts to think he has found a new home then by all means keep him
Tier 4 Yuli- He is showing his age but he is a good mentor Diaz- He is very streaky and very replaceable
Tier 5 Smith - too soon to tell

Goodrum 2. Castro 3. Will Smith Roster Resource lists Maldonado as having a vesting option for 2023. Cots Baseball Contracts indicates that it is a club option. Spotrac says he will be a FA. IIRC I read somewhere that Maldonado has already met the requirement(s) of the vesting option. Maldonado is playing for $5M this season. Did the vesting option lock in a figure the Astros must pay if they exercise the club option, but if the team declines the club option he becomes a FA? Hard to make sense of it all. Tier 1. Verlander. If 3 years $120M will get it done, do it. Tier 2. Josh Bell provided the contract we offer him will not adversely affect the team's effort to sign Tucker to an extension. Tier 3. Try to sign Montero. Tier 4.. Brantley. Agree with the 1-year $8M, plus $8M club option for 2024 Tier 5. Will Smith has a club option of $13M for next season. I’ll pass thank you. Bring both Lee and Y. Diaz to ST and let them compete for the starting catchers job. If Maldonado is retained, let him serve as a backup/mentor to the starter. Let Leon, Chas and Meyers compete for the CF and LF starting jobs. If Brantley does not return, one of those 3 could be the 4th outfielder. Bring back Dubon as the super utility guy. Bring up Brown and put him in the rotation or bullpen. I think he will succeed in either role. Bring up Solomon and put him in the bullpen.

Tier 1. Verlander- Just because he is the second coming of Nolan Ryan does not mean that we should make the same mistake we made with Ryan. What does this mean? I think he is referring to the way the team did Ryan the offseason Ryan left Houston to head to the Rangers. If I recall correctly McMullen wanted Ryan to take a pay cut to return to Houston due to Ryan’s age.

JV: Keep if at all possible. But I think $105M/3years is probably my max on him.
Brantley: Love him but his previous shoulder injuries look like they've caught up with him. Time to say goodbye.
Mancini: If they aren't willing to go big for Bell (or if JV and Tucker get big extensions) then go ahead and bring him back.
Yuli: He'll probably find an MLB job on a lesser club for a few years, then he can have some role in our organization. But he shouldn't be resigned as a player.
Montero: Resign, 2 years + an option, $8 million per.
Diaz: Resign if he's willing, no more than three years, $7 million per.
Vazquez: Would love to have him back, but he's good enough to be a starter and he won't willingly ride the pine to Fatchete, so he gone.
Castro, Smith, Goodrum: They gone.

We let money and the fear of his age get in the way of keeping him on the team. Totally get your point. However, Crane loves JV and will do whatever he can to keep him an Astro. The reason JV will leave is either another team like the Yankees offer him an absurd amount of money we can’t compete with OR JV wants to go somewhere else to finish his career.

The problem is defining what an absurd amount of money actually is.
