5.5 Games Back
Estes vs. Javier
Keep the train rolling. Offense is still wildly inconsistent, but the pitching is helping to stabilize the team as it did in 2022.

Bielak sent to the A's for "cash considerations". Was he truly worthless?
I would rather keep Bielak and trade Dana Brown for cash.

I wouldn't say he was worthless, but he wasn't worth a lot at this point. I personally would have preferred to keep him and demote Dubin, but I'm not sure about their option statuses, etc. that likely played some role in the decision. But, what we do know about Bielak: 1. If he had any remaining options for the minor leagues they were very limited. 2. He's 28 years old now and hasn't really shown a ton of improvement in his "stuff" despite a decent year on paper last year. 3. He's arbitration eligible next year so he'll start to be worth more than his production warrants. 4. His ceiling is as a #4 starter at absolute best if he's in the rotation. He'll never have the stuff to be a dominant reliever which leaves him as a long reliever/mop-up guy in the bullpen.

Strikeout rate dropped for the third straight year, and his GB rate tanked. He has no options and is a mop-up man with an ERA near 6.00.

I predict we will soon and often have need for a mop-up man, regardless of all that number-crunching. Who are we going to use? Martinez's arm is gonna fall off.

Blair Henley is still on the 40-man and they've already used an option on him this year, so I imagine it would be him. That said, they're already in a six man rotation and Urquidy will be back soon. He and Arrighetti could give you some length out of the bullpen.

Don't get me wrong. I'm no fan of Bielak. I always hated to see him enter a game. I just don't trust Brown's GM abilities.

Javier has the worst xFIP among Astro starters the last 21 days, and it isn't close. It may be he who gets moved to a long-relief role if he doesn't turn it around

I'm starting to feel sorry for José Abreu. I think he let Baggy convince him he had 3 more years when his body was saying something else

Opposing pitcher has solid stuff and command but has been homer prone. Should get some good balls to swing at and drive if they work counts. Good opportunity for that first Loperfido bomb.

I wish I was getting paid almost $20M a year to not work Normally I would agree. But he built a notable rep over his career for being a selfless teammate, even though he was surrounded by losers. It's killing him that he can't contribute
