Let’s make sure we stay focused, and handle the Angels like we can. Pitching favors us in the first two matchups.
A few guys who have had success against Detmers are Altuve (.364 AVG and 1 HR), Singleton (2 HRs and 5 RBIs), Pena (.357 AVG and 1 RBI, and Tucker (.313 AVG and 3 RBIs).

Kyle Tucker is 2nd in MLB in wRC+ behind only Ohtani. He's 1st in ISO which means he's the best power hitter on the planet so far. He's one of three guys with an ISO of .240 or more and a strikeout rate under 18% (Josh Naylor and Juan Soto the others). He's tied for 1st in the Majors in home runs (w/ Gunnar Henderson). He's 1st in the Majors in walk rate. He and Juan Soto are the only two players with double digit home runs and more walks than strikeouts. He's one of three players with 3.0 WAR so far (Ohatani and Betts both with exactly 3.0 as well); since they are both in the NL, Tucker has legitimately been the American League's most valuable player so far.

I don't get our obsession with Dubon being a starter when Loperfido is rocking it. Dubon is a backup...not a primary. I don't know if his splits against lefties are poor in the minor leagues, but he's 2-5 against them at the big league level. Let the kid play. I know it's not all him, but the team is 8-4 when he has started, and there is no doubt in my mind that he brought a spark his first few games that we desperately needed.

What Loperfido is doing (40% strikeout rate and BAbip over .500) is clearly not going to last, but that's an argument for why he shouldn't usurp a guy like Chas when he returns, not for saying we shouldn't play him over a below-average slap hitting utility guy, at least for as long as the hot streak does continue. |
