Dead at 73 years of age. RIP, Staubby. Very sad. Remember seeing him play. Maybe one of the best batting eyes of all time for the team. When he was traded when I was a kid, Houston almost went into meltdown

One of the first 45/Astros to grace the cover of the Sporting News, have it in my Baseball collection. Great hitter and could throw some D in RF.

Dead at 73 years of age. RIP, Staubby. sorry to hear this, I remember him well and didn't like it when they traded him. He was a great hitter with an excellent knowledge of the strike zone. Rest in peace

When he was traded when I was a kid, Houston almost went into meltdown Apparently Rusty had a sense of humor too. I ran across this quote at Astros Daily: Colt .45's first baseman Rusty Staub on a visit to the mound to give Hal Woodeshick a bit of advice: "Now this guy is a first ball hitter. He'll either swing at the first pitch or he'll take it."

I think it was the last game of 1963 when Houston started an all rookie team. Staub played that game. When he was traded I really got upset, mad at the team for a month. When he came back my brother and I went to a game and he was playing right field. He had slowed down considerably by then and he came charging in on a hard hit ball. From the angle that I was sitting at I was sure that he was not going to get there, he did and made a great sliding catch. Good times. Later that game he whacked a double.
A shame he is gone, he was a good man.
