How long until Matthews can make Pena a bench player? Matthews has been developing pretty quickly but it would probably be halfway through next season at the earliest, and he's still having strikeout issues. In fact, his strikeout rate only increased with each promotion. It would not be wise for them to head into next year counting on him coming up and being a significant factor. I mentioned to Sherwin yesterday that Goldschmidt will be available and likely only get a one year deal. Despite declining, he was still a league average hitter with 20+ HR and 10+ SB overall, and destroyed LHP. Meanwhile Singleton crushed RHP. I could see a cheap platoon like that to ride out the last year of Abreu's deadweight contract. Arguably the worst thing on the farm this year was Dezenzo's injury. I bet they were really hoping he was healthy all year and proved he was ready to take over for Bregman. I really wonder what they're going to do there. I just can't see them matching that Chapman contract. |

And I just looked it up and forgot that Salazar is on the roster, so he can lift Caratini at any point and not worry about not having a backup for Yainer in a worst case scenario. |
