How much should we be excited about Luhnow’s pursuit of the White Sox first baseman?

How much should we be excited about Luhnow’s pursuit of the White Sox first baseman? Think you'd trade Tucker for him? I don't know if I see Chicago unloading Abreu's salary just to get Alvarez in return. The White Sox aren't making noise about wanting to dump payroll like the Tigers did last year, and apparently Abreu's been a real mensch to this kid Moncada they got

One reason I think Luhnow's pursuing Abreu, and I never knew this before, is apparently last season Abreu DoorDashed a Cubano spread from a north-side restaurant to Yuli in the clubhouse during the away series at Chicago. So they know he'd be a good teammate

Abreu is not a good first baseman, but, that is his only position. If Correa is out for an extended period, acquiring Abreu could play first base, move Yuli to third, and let Bregman play SS.......anything to get the lazy Marwin off the field. I don't think Luhnow gives up a lot of Abreu. It would cost more for Realmuto and catching is a bigger need. Having only Stassi and Federowicz is not a bright outlook.

Abreu only makes sense as a replacement for Gattis next year at this point unless he really gets going.

2017 1B 89 318 35 95 18 0 13 56 33 55 0 3 .299 .365 .478 .843 Two years is all GDP 19 in two years

I think if they are looking for a reasonable and fix for DH this wouldn't be a terrible trade to make. I also don't think he will cost that much, at least not as much as the other Jose.

My concern is that we have Yordan Alvarez coming up. He's struggled a bit in AAA for the few games but I have no doubt he will turn it around as he still has 2 HRs and 4 BBs in 10 games.
He's our next player at 1B. If we got Abreu then Gattis would certainly be gone by next year with Alvarez possibly taking over first and Abreu at DH.
I wonder if the White Sox would ask for Alvarez in exchange for Abreu. In that case I may have a hard time with that as Houston has a ton of young players waiting for a big payday soon (and may have to pony up for Keuchel or get another pitcher to replace him and Morton). Gattis would be the cheaper option to keep in the long run. The question becomes, will keeping Gattis cost us a championship or would paying for Abreu buy us one?

Throw in Giles and we have a deal

I posted in the other thread it looks like Abreu is off the market. White Sox want to keep him as a mentor for the younger players coming up. It seems he excels in that department.

MLB.com's Richard Justice had previously reported that Astros president of baseball operations and general manager Jeff Luhnow was looking to add a big-name bat before the Trade Deadline, and that Abreu was among the players that Houston was exploring.
But the great value that the White Sox reportedly place in Abreu's clubhouse presence, his influence over many of the team's young players and the plethora of top talent in the upper levels of Chicago's Minor League system could have been factors in the organization's inclination to hold on to Abreu, who is under team control through 2019.
July 21: Despite some interest from the Astros, the White Sox appear unlikely to move All-Star first baseman Jose Abreu before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline, according to a report by USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

If he is not in the line up our offense will suffer greatly unless we can get another bat capable of putting up an OPS of over 800. That is why I moved off of talking about Abreu and started at least turning over a few rocks on Castellanos. He can play (though not well), 3rd, left field and right field as well as dh. Gonzales though can not be given extended numbers of at bats as he clearly does not seem to be up the challenge this year.

Once you start declining, you never know if that is ancient history or not. I'm suspecting you'll NEVER get that production again. You have to evaluate him based on the recent decline and his age. He's at the age where the decline looks more like typical aging and not a one season aberration. GMs are catching on to the math and less likely to pay a player for past production. Particularly if that production was elsewhere. You want to pay him for future expected production and no more.
