The players. It’s not Luhnow’s nor Hinch’s fault that they’ve taken a step backwards in their production. Of course, I’m not talking about Bregman, Kemp, or even Gattis.

Fact: No team in history has played a full season without going into a slump.

Fact: No team in history has played a full season without going into a slump. I know. I’m just saying there’s only so much Hinch and Luhnow can do about these slumps. They can’t hit or pitch for these guys.

There is nothing the players can do, either, to cure a slump, other than going out there and swinging at pitches every day. WHich they are doing.

Marwin, though, has kind of played himself out of the starting lineup much like Marisnick. The proof is in the chatter about the problem in LF.

Hopefully, Altuve and Correa will ignite the offense back to what it was last season. I think they said Correa is traveling with the team on this West Coast trip.

The Astros are playing through that part of the season where injuries (both those that require a DL stint and those that don't but nag like hell) are giving the team some real adversity.
The injuries necessitate roster shifts, red-eye flights from Fresno, etc. which create further instability. Just look at Tyler White the other day. Caught a flight from Fresno at 1am (Houston time), arrived at MMP by 10am, then goes out and gets on base all 4 times in a 1pm game.
The adversity tends to breed impatience, which is why the Astros' most successful hitters are generally the ones seeing the most pitches. The guys who go up and hack at everything tend to pop up, strike out, etc. and that allows mediocre opposing pitchers to cruise through innings while the opponent's bullpen doesn't really get overworked.
I don't have major complaints with Hinch's management of the team, but I agree with OlPapa that mid-season is not the time to experiment with bizarre fielding assignments, such as Yuli at 2B. Kemp and even White have more experience than Yuli at that position. I also think that Hinch should consider 100 pitches to be the standard pitch count quota for the first 3 months of the season only. At this point in the season, it should be 90 pitches. A tremendous number of runs have scored against the Astros on pitches 91 and higher.
If the Astros can just play .500 ball while Altuve and Correa are both out, they will be fine come September.

I think the Astro's are just in a bad funk right now. Key players are out, a couple of more are going through slumps, it's the dog days of baseball, it's just a multiple of things right now. They are just down in in the dumps. Once one or two of them gets fired back up that will have a tendency to light the fire for the other ones.

Maybe this is too soft on my part, but the Rangers series was also kind of a trap series. You expect to walk all over them and take at least an easy two out of three. You could even see it with the pitching with Verlander. He threw some pitches right down the middle like he wasn't afraid that they would even be able to hit it. Add that with the demotivation of Altuve going down (even when not at his best, he's a spark and leader for the team) and the bullpen hitting one of their periodic rough patches, and you get a perfect storm of "blahness".

Big difference in Jake and Marwinl......Jake keeps busting it to try and help the team in spite of his hitting problems. Marwin doesn't hit and drags his lazy ass. I will take Jake over Marwin all day long. I despise laziness.

You don't expect to tank a home series against the bottom feeders in the divsion who have just been hammered four straight by the A's at home. Hitting that poorly against that pitching staff is terrible. It had to be an act oif desperation on Hinch's part to put Gurriel at 2B.. I hope he learned his lesson and doesn't do that again.

Nobody expected to tank. I don't think anybody took them seriously enough, hence the trap series. Your assume an easy win and don't really play at the level you need to, mentally or physically.

We are 1-6 since Paastro last posted. Just sayin..... I can live with his absence. I don't think he put a hex on the team. Since he claims he works with all-stars, maybe the Astros should call him in as a consultant to straighten out our oiffense. And, I assure you that I have not kept up with when he posted.
