you have to believe that Giles is a little pissed right now. Hard to argue with the results though If he's pissed, hopefully it becomes a constructive source of motivation for him to do better. Peacock just went out there and pitched like a champ, in terms of mechanics, strategy/sequencing, and mental fortitude. We may have just watched a member of the 2018 AL All-Star Team. I hope he is pissed. I also hope that he is professional enough to understand the move and work even harder to make sure he is the best he can be.

If Giles is pissed, he has no right to be. If AJ has lost confidence in him, he has nobody to blame but himself for stinking in last year's playoffs. Peacock showed his value last year during the regular season and the WS. AJ showed lots of confidence in Brad today. Kalas gave Peacock a plug when he said the fact that nobody was stirring in the pen showed what AJ thinks of Peacock. It would have made no sense to pull Peacock who was doing the job to bring in Giles, who has proven to be unreliable. I wanted them to sign a closer in the off-season. Today should show Giles if he wants to keep being the closer that he has to do the job. In fact, Peacock would be a great choice to close games on a regular basis.

Showalter has to be frustrated with this game, as his starter and Brach gave him their best and yet his offense just couldn't pull through for him.
Unless O'Day has some injury the public doesn't know about, he probably should have been used to pitch the 7th instead of Castro, who gave up the winning run. I think the Astros would have found it much more difficult to score off of O'Day. If O'Day had pitched the 7th, there is a good chance the game goes into extra innings.

I hate to add to the Giles criticism, but you can’t help but think that Hinch’s faith in Giles is not that high. Even last season (though Giles had great overall numbers), he was the one reliever given special treatment in terms of usage, which didn’t make any difference in the postseason.
I hope Luhnow gets us a reliever that Hinch can trust with the game on the line or else the others will get worn out come October.

I'm considering disallowing guest posting. Thoughts? I agree. We don't need jerks on our board being disruptive.

(Memories of Mike Scott controversies.)
An Orioles fan wondered whether Peacock was doctoring the ball with a substance on the bill of his cap:
is he doctoring the ball?
That thing is dancing all over the place, and anytime they keep the camera on him it looks like there’s a spot on the back of his hat, near the top, that he keeps going back to. Looks like there’s something there.

Astros outscore the O's 19 to 9 over the three-game series according to my fuzzy math.

you have to believe that Giles is a little pissed right now. Hard to argue with the results though Who cares if the Sultan of Squat is pissed. Hinch’s decision to stick with Peacock was a no-brainer. If Giles wants to be “the man,” he needs to pitch like “the man” every time he is called on. We shouldn’t have to sit on the edge of our seat every time our “closer” comes in. Right now Peacock is “the man.” Giles is not. No contest.

The Orioles now have to face the Yankees. Going to be tough for them in the cold up there.
The Astros will play Eric Hosmer, Freddie Galvis, and the Padres. One interesting thing is that Brad Hand has been having a rough start to his season. So we will see what challenges the Padres bring. By May the Astros' schedule will be pretty tough, so need to sock away as many wins in this easier part of the schedule as possible.

Mystery guest. Here we go. Am I the only one who has an idea as to the identity of this "mystery guest"? Bortaz has a good idea in not allowing mystery guests to posts, and, if this is the jackass I think it could be, his membership should be rejected. We don't need a mongoloid cluttering up the board with garbage.

Good example of how Correa throwing to Yuli would probably not resulted in a run, whereas Marwin throwing to Davis did. Marwin looked pretty ragged at SS today. I wonder if Hinch might move Bregman over the next time he rests Correa.

I don't know if it's so cut-and-dry y'all. If we had a game tomorrow instead of a day off we may very well have seen Giles in the 9th this afternoon

I wonder if Hinch might move Bregman over the next time he rests Correa. That sounds likely. April is a good time to experiment with new things and also to continue certain experiments (like the 4-man outfield) that began in spring training. Davis is still very new to the 1B position so getting him some more innings in there will help to determine whether he has any place at that position later in the season, or possibly in the postseason. Gotta see what works best now so that the best possible lineups can be unleashed on the Yankees, Indians and other tough teams coming up in May/June.

Where would the Astros have been without Peacock since opening day 2017? It is easy to forget that at the end of ST 2017 it came down to Peacock vs Hoyt for the last OD roster spot and the fact that Peacock was out of options and Hoyt was not was likely the deciding factor in Peacock getting the last roster spot.
Today’s closing battery is another reminder of Luhnow’s excellence. While Chris Carter was the headliner, Peacock and Stassi also came to Houston in the first Jed Lowrie trade back in February 2013.

There's some kind of hitting funk that has descended on the City of Los Angeles. The Dodgers mustered only *one hit* against Corbin and the D-backs today, and the Angels have gotten only 3 hits against Kluber and the Indians late into that game.

If you look around those guys in the front office make the right moves with prospects a lot more often than not. For every JD Martinez there are a whole lot of guys you never hear from again.

Non-moves can be just as critical as moves. People forget if we would've traded for a reliever last Summer the pieces to make the Verlander trade would've had to have been scrapped and started over. Who knows if that would've gotten done given the alternative scenarios

Of course A.J. is going to say that, but I hope he has decided that he isn’t going to put anymore games in jeopardy by pulling a pitcher who is dominating and bringing in Giles just to stroke the guy’s ego and allow him the opportunity to pad his “save” stat.

Two of the administrative physicians I work with are rabid Dodger fans. You better believe I've risked karma to rub it in every day since the season started. That, and the huge Astros flag flying from my office wall...

On a side note, the Arlington Rangers are being hammered in Oakland tonight. Fister didn't fare too well against the A's.
