I have no idea where to start so I'm just getting feedback for now.
Has anybody here bought land (Hill Country or something similar in Texas) that can give me advice on value, taxes, location, etc.?
I'd appreciate any information or direction.

You are talking about my backyard there amigo. What are you looking for. Lake front property is 125k+, river front about 1200 a running foot of frontage, acreage about 10k-12k per acre. Be very careful though there are costs to build that you really should know about before signing up for the final deal.

I don't want to build anything right now. I just want to get something to start paying off for the future.

the biggest mistake that people make in choosing land is not taking construction costs into the equation when determining fair market value. Johnson City is real scenic. Marble Falls has easy access to Austin and has a lot of recreation around. Kerrville and Fredricksburg are over priced. Blanco is nice and is close to Austin and San Antonio. Burnet is close to a real big lake. Depends on what makes your socks roll up and down.

I sit on my front porch and watch 30 deer every day, I go fishing all the time and there are not a lot of boats on the lake. A good flat 1 acre lot can be had for 28k, not on the lake of course. In the spring we have wild flowers out the wazuh. Nice big hills all around.

look up the vanishing Texas river cruise. Do a day trip and take your family out on it. You will enjoy the trip.

No, putting it on hold for now. It's still the dream though.
