This Padres bullpen is ranked #18 in MLB by Fangraphs but they look better than that to me. They've got 5 really solid guys.

McHugh + Sipp = 3 innings, 3 hits, no walks, no runs
McCullers = 5 innings, 7 hits, 3 walks, 3 runs

Giles bad in no-leverage situations. In a way it was better to trade prospects for him than pay $10M a season for someone just to go out there and wing it

the team sure looked out of sorts tonight. started ok but then the wheels came off the wagon. everyone seems to be pressing. I guess a day off did not help things

This was a Jeb Bush night for the Astros. Very low energy.

No energy at all. So far, the Astros offense has taken Friday nights off...........Oh, Giles keeps showing why we needed to have signed a closer over the winter. That squattng routine of his makes me sick.....he has given up a run in every game he's pitched.

Giles makes me want to vomit with that squat routine. His fastball has no movement and gets hammered. Depending on him to close games is a scary thought.

The Astros have created a monster. Pirates now have a better record than the Astros.

And as Houston sleeps, the Angels have tied the Stros in the AL West... The Angels’ offense has been better so far. Granted, the A’s aren’t great, but they blew a 6-0 lead to Anaheim yesterday.

If there was ever a more certain sweep, I don't know what it would be. Anything can happen, obviously, but this is a massive mismatch on paper. Fivethirtyeight.com is putting the odds of an Astros victory today at 73%. They rarely put any team's odds of winning that high. The May schedule gets a lot tougher for the Astros, so each win against these softer teams will soften the effect of losses later to the big contending teams. Well that sucked.

What happened to all that Sweep talk? Astros will win both games this weekend, thus taking the series.

We're kinda due to get our butts whipped by a National League team. Way overdue in fact. This series is a trap in the way NFL games can be traps

He’s looking more and more like the freeloader of the championship run. He's a head case like Fiers was a head case. It's like he had this cocky belief in himself when he pitched so well last August, and ever since he goes out there thinkin bout that Saturday game against the A's instead of putting it behind him

He’s not a reliable closer right now. Just the way it is.

It's like he had this cocky belief in himself when he pitched so well last August, and ever since he goes out there thinkin bout that Saturday game against the A's instead of putting it behind him When you’ve only got two pitches, you better make sure at least one of them is exceptional on a given day. Sometimes, that slider doesn’t break enough, and he gets hammered with that pedestrian fastball of his. If I were Crane or Luhnow, I’d be scouting relievers right about now.

Great job by AJ pulling Giles in the 9th even though he's the closer. Wouldn't have gotten the W without it. I give the manager the benefit of the doubt around here, but I'm a little surprised with the sense of urgency he appears to be taking at the end of games when it's only April. As long as he keeps doing that on the field, I frankly don't care what he says in the press about who's the closer and who isn't the closer

I'd really like to see a smattering of about fifteen 7th, 8th, and 9th inning appearances from Giles in April/May to gauge how he would be most effective for the team as the season goes forward. He may well be suited more to a middle relief or setup role. With the low ERA and FIP figures he posts, I can't agree with the people who are calling for him to be demoted to the minor leagues. He has a use in the majors, it may just not be in games that are Late & Close.
