McCullers vs. Perdomo
Perdomo was a bargain-bin Rule 5 pick who has pitched poorly in spring training and in his first regular season start in 2018. McCullers is viewed by many as a top candidate for the Cy Young this year. Nonetheless, it's baseball so this one could still get away from the Stros. Gotta stay focused guys!

Brad Hand is being called a "shattered pitcher" over on a Padres fan board; he's certainly had a rough start to the season. However, they have a quartet of relievers (Craig Stammen, Jordan Lyles, Adam Cimber, Kirby Yates) who have pitched very well this year, plus a decent long man in Robbie Erlin, who is being considered as a future starter for the Padres. A key for the Astros will be to beat up on the starters as much as possible as it's the Padres rotation which is its main liability.
On the hitting side, Eric Hosmer and Freddy Galvis have provided the main offensive punch for San Diego so far. Jose Pirela is hitting the ball with authority but without a lot to show for it, but he could be dangerous at MMP. Wil Myers is on the DL with Hunter Renfroe filling in, which should make things slightly easier on Astros pitchers, though Renfroe has not hit poorly in his games so far.

And Wil Myers being on the DL never happens...

Will Brad Hand become Tony Sipp 2.0?

I seriously doubt that...maybe breakout pitcher...but not a top candidate for Cy Young....no way he is considered in that tier yet....he will need a breakout year this year...followed by a stronger next year...then he will get that status.

Will Brad Hand become Tony Sipp 2.0? I would think not...but he is a lefty, and just got paid....so you never know.

He was lucky to make the AS team last year, quite frankly.

If there was ever a more certain sweep, I don't know what it would be. Anything can happen, obviously, but this is a massive mismatch on paper.

I am not among the people who think McCullers has a shot at Cy Young this year, but over on Crawfish Boxes there is a vocal contingent that thinks this. Which is why I mentioned it. McCullers is certainly way better than Perdomo.

Quick trade Tony Sipp for Brad Hand.... I think the Royals might do Kelvin Herrera for Sipp + salary support + a decent prospect. Let's say, for argument's sake, that Giles falls off the rails in the regular season, or Hinch just doesn't trust him for the postseason. A playoff bullpen anchored by Rondon, Peacock, Smith, Devo, and Herrera wold be formidable.

If there was ever a more certain sweep, I don't know what it would be. Anything can happen, obviously, but this is a massive mismatch on paper. Fivethirtyeight.com is putting the odds of an Astros victory today at 73%. They rarely put any team's odds of winning that high. The May schedule gets a lot tougher for the Astros, so each win against these softer teams will soften the effect of losses later to the big contending teams.

Correa comes into tonight's game with the top batting average among qualified players in all of MLB. Altuve is at #9.

We have more than one pitcher who could make a run at the Cy Young and Keuchel is not one of them.

I'm wondering if all the mileage San Diego put on Brad Hand's arm has caught up with him. He threw 80 innings last year and 90 the year before that

i laugh when I hear them talking about a pitcher working 150 innings and thinking that's a big accomplishment. Pitchers like Nolan Ryan, Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, and those guys would think today's pitcher are all wimps. Some people thimk if a guy pitches 200 innings he's overworked. Ryan, Gibson, Marichal, Drysdale, etc. pitched all of those innings and didn't go on the DL to rest

Ryan, Gibson, Marichal, Drysdale, etc. pitched all of those innings and didn't go on the DL to rest Many people chalk that generational different up to poor knowledge of sports medicine prior to 1990, or think that athletes and maybe just people in general no longer have the "tough guy" attitude that they used to. However I wonder to what extent changes in the food supply have affected pitchers' ability to throw 200 to 250 innings per year. In the eras of Gibson, Koufax, Johnson, Carlton, et al. there were many fewer toxins in the soil, the animal flesh, and the fruits and vegetables; Round-Up and other chemicals hadn't yet depleted the soil of its essential minerals and nutrients; the water in which the fish were caught was a lot cleaner; livestock weren't being injected with unnatural levels of hormones and antibiotics; and the Genetically Modified Foods revolution had yet to kick off. It stands to reason that if athletes prior to the 1970s were eating purer, healthier foods, it would have aided their physical development, bone structure, muscle tone, etc. whereas since 1990 the foods in supermarkets are often categorizable as "Frankenfoods". I'd view the period from 1970 to 1990 as a transitional time in American nutrition where things were getting worse but they weren't quite as bad as they are now. I know that President Trump is aware of this and that it is one of his priorities to get the foods back to the way they were grown before. However as one can imagine it's not easy to take on Monsanto, Dow Chemical, and other multinational corporations that control farming on an industrial scale.

Time will tell, I think over the next 6 weeks. The early results don't look encouraging for Hand but it's still early so I wouldn't be too surprised if he turns things around. He just pitched yesterday so probably Green won't put him on the mound tonight. May well see him in Games 2 or 3 though.

Those Orioles the Astros just swept sure are playing the Yankees close. They really weren't a bad team I don't think. The Astros were just so much better.
