So far so good on paring that team ERA. Down to 3.11 now. A shutout tomorrow probably gets it down to 3.10 or 3.09.
The 2018 Astros have already set the franchise win record. Why not set the ERA record too.

meanwhile the INdians are sputtering to a conclusion of their regular season, having trouble beating the Royals.
13-14 in September by my count.

Indians C Yan Gomes got his hand banged up pretty bad (bleeding, anyway) in the KC series so that might throw the Indians a little wrinkle.
Hand and Cimber could be pretty dangerous out of the bullpen. Ollie Perez will probably also crack the ALDS roster.
Astros will have to contain Josh Donaldson... should be a good series.

I was a little surprised to see the Pirates and Marlins cancel their final game of the year. Each team will play only 161 games this year. Lots of other teams are stuck playing series with no playoff implications to finish the year. Not sure why the Pirates and Marlins want to be different and just cancel their last game.
The Pirates are telling ticket holders for the cancelled game that they can exchange it for an April 2019 game ticket. That will inevitably not work for everybody (maybe they won't even be living in PIT next year).
Sounds like an awful way to treat their fans who may have wanted to salute them on a winning season.

Having 100 wins is very impressive. For instance, the Red Sox have reached that mark for the FIRST time. Well at least in over a 70 years. In 1946 they had 104 wins, 1912 they had 105 wins, and in 1915- 101 wins. (When Babe Ruth was their best pitcher) 4 now in almost 120 years. linkIt's 3 times now for us. 1998, 2017, and 2018.

Last night I saw that cancellation in the schedule , and figured it was because of expected weather (which occurs in this manner sometimes). I said during our low times that Bad Baseball is better than no baseball at all. Apparently some team's managements don't agree and really care more for just mailing it in than the fan's enjoyment.

They’re both playing today. Maybe it was a game that was previously cancelled due to weather and won’t be made up.

I was out of town all day at a family function but got to watch most of the games............A very encouraging day for Correa with a home run and double to right-center.....swing looked good. If he can keep this up, he will be a big help in the post-season. Jake and Straw had good days. Pitching was very good with the exception of the homer Smith allowed and the mess Rondon was lucky to escape. All in all a very good day that allowed Hinch to do what he wanted to do. And a big congratulations on getting win 103 to set the club record. At this point, I would leave Rondon off the playoff roster. My favorite part was that both were driven to RCF. To me it’s a good sign because it means he isn’t forcing the issue. When Bagwell was slumping he always seemed to climb out by driving the ball to the opposite field. It's especially rotten for the Pirates' season ticket holders. They paid for 81 home games yet will only have a chance to see 80. All in all, the Bucs had a decent season and they played some highly entertaining baseball at times. If the 2018 season ticket holders renew for 2019, the front office's offer of exchanging a ticket from the cancelled game for a 2019 regular season ticket really doesn't compensate them for anything. By comparison, today's Orioles-Astros game also has no playoff implications but no one has proposed canceling the game.

Really an affront to those who paid for these tickets, and expected to see a game.

I would also sit out Correa today. Looks like he was feeling better yesterday, had his timing back and was driving the ball like he did last season. No need to take a chance on him tweaking his back again today in a meaningless game. Should just let him rest until game #1 of the ALDS Friday.

The most important thing today is Charlie Morton. Can he pitch like he normally does? AJ has some tough decisions to make with his roster. There are question marks in the bullpen. Some relievers have had issues lately.
And the team has won 103 games😎😎😎

we are currently outscoring our opponents by 1.65 runs per game. That is the third best record since the dh era started. We were outdone by the 98 Yankees at 1.91 and the 2001 Mariners at 1.85. We have also allowed the fewest runs by a team in the designated hitter era.

we also will end up with the best era by a starting staff, and by a team of relievers in baseball. The top 11 teams when ranked by team era are in the playoffs. The lone exception being the Rockies and who in their right minds would of thought that they would be in the top 20 playing in that launching pad.

Here is another interesting fact.
IF we win our 104th today, it will be the hightest total in MLB history for the second place for most wins in a season. (behind Boston with 107 or 108)

If the Astros win today and the Red Sox lose, amazingly, the Astros will finish just 3 games behind Boston.

Astros in their entire history had not ever won 22 in a month. If they win today, they will have done it twice this year. (May and September)

A WS win this year would be additonal special considering there is a really good chance we do not get even one individual award. Talk about a team effort.

We could get some gold glove or silver slugger awards and Verlander has an excellent chance at the Cy Young, although I think Snell may have a slight edge.

MVP, Cy, ROY, Mgr/yr. I think Verlander comes up short too. AJ should get some consideration, but what Melvin did in Oakland is going to be hard to beat.

Why Snell over JV? He didn't reach 200 innings, and his SO rates and walk rate are nowhere near JV. JV has better WHIP.
The only things Snell has over JV are the 2 things modern fans say no longer matter...ERA and Wins. And in far fewer innings pitched.

I think Verlander was the most valuable starting pitcher in the AL with Sale being injured. He won't win though. Snell will win.

I think you are right, but, I'd give it to Verlander I found this little tool that ESPN has for CYA prediction. Good, bad, or ugly.....it's one perspective. Here's their formula.... YP: In The Neyer/James Guide To Pitchers -- co-authored by Bill James and ESPN.com's Rob Neyer presents a method, based on past results, to predict Cy Young balloting. This page provides an in-season snapshot of the Cy Young "race," as figured by the following formula: Cy Young Points (CYP) = ((5*IP/9)-ER) + (SO/12) + (SV*2.5) + Shutouts + ((W*6)-(L*2)) + VB (see below). VB: Victory Bonus is a 12-point bonus awarded for leading your team to the division championship link
