With Verlander and Cole bending FAs in 2020, do the Astros spend more in FA this year or make major trades to go for the title? We all saw what the Hunsicker experiment did to the team. And it was ugly. I look at it this way. On paper we were the best team in MLB this year. Maybe BOS won a few more, but they got to play the Orioles 19 times too. Still we didn't get past the ALCS. In a short series it is a crap shoot anyway. Many NYY teams fell short after cornering the market on talent. I vote for Luhnow to take a smart strategic approach that best serves the team's interest short and long term. |

I guess...if "going overboard" means defending the value of a guy that has been very good for us for several years and helped bring us from nothing to a championship. It has no effect on your farm system. But it also means you're on the hook for a very long term if you're looking at high-level talent.
Trades of more than one great but not-ready-for-prime-time prospects to get a high level arb player don't have nearly the impact on the payroll but they damage your chances of having a sustained run of being a contender. Avoid that option like the plague that it is.
