www.chron.com/sports/astros/article/Former-Astros-infielder-Luis-Valbuena-dies-in-car-13449049.php" Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo, both former Astros players, died in a car accident on Friday, according to Marcos Grunfeld of Univision Sports. Valbuena was 33 and Castillo was 37.
Valbuena played as an infielder for the Astros from 2015-16 while Castillo played 15 games as an infielder with the club during his last MLB season in 2008.
Valbuena established a career-high for homer (25) in his first season with Houston, helping the club reach the ALDS that year. In total, he homered 38 times and drove in 96 runs during his two seasons with the Astros." Seems like driving accidents for MLB players have been happening too often recently.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any "car flip" jokes yet.

Just read a report that said they were passengers in the car and the car hit a rock that had rolled into the road. Driver and another passenger lived. How does the car hit a rock (boulder I assume) hard enough to kill two passengers, but the driver lives? Maybe Val and Castillo were in the back and a boulder rolled over the car?

They were ejected from the vehicle d/t not wearing seatbelts. The other 2 had their restraints on. Apparently, the rock was placed there intentionally, and they were robbed by a gang after the crash.

A tragedy of the worst sort. Thieves throw a rock in the road to cause a wreck so they could rob the players. I hope they catch them an execute them. Thoughts and prayers for their families.

I just looked at the list of Astros minor leaguers playing winter league ball in Venezuela this offseason. There are 5. Two of them are Venezuelan. One is a kid from South Carolina, one from California and the other is from Edinburg, Texas. Venezuela is a dangerous country. I’m surprised any of them was willing to go there to play ball.

They wouldn't be targeted as much. Less money/jewelry/etc. Valbuena made $8 million last year.

Young players are taking a big chance playing in that socialist country, especially being lawless and the country in turmoil. Just playing winter ball in the DR or PR can be a challenge, not for the game, but your life.

Saw the story on Val, sorry to hear it and to lose his life in a country that is burning to the ground.
