Name some of your top players.
1. Will Clark: He hit .319 (145 OPS+) his final season in 130 games and then just decided to call it quits after that postseason. I know he had some health issues but they didn't seem to be keeping him from being an excellent player still. Two or three more good years and he's likely a legit HoF candidate.
2. Billy Wagner: 1.43 ERA 7-2 37 Saves and then done. Seemed healthy and was one of the best lefty relievers of all-time. Again, another strong year or two and he's making the Hall.

Adrian Beltre probably had a good year or two also.

Those guys were both in their mid-late 30's. Even though still effective, they knew when to hang it up. Better to see that than a once-great looking foolish. Koufax was done at 30 after back-to-back CY awards. Life isn't fair.

I agree better to retire before you hit rock bottom, but it's interesting when players retire when still at almost peak performance.

Bonds not making it to 3,000 and Fred McGriff finishing so short of 500 homers comes to mind. Also, it’s a shame Henderson and Biggio didn’t get to 300 homers, but they played forever.

Bob Horner had a short career despite hitting above replacement every season he was in the majors. I have no idea the circumstances of his retirement though

I guess if I'm going to point out Wagner, Rivera is up there too. He was 6-2 with 44 Saves and a 2.11 ERA (190 ERA+) his final season.
Mike Mussina is another one.

I think for Mussina, finally getting a 20-win season was the icing on the cake. Sadly, had he played one more season, he would’ve had that elusive ring.

Koufax due to arm trouble retired too young sadly. 12 seasons of almost cruel domination, and had to retire at age 30.
IF he had lived in this era, and had access to the medical marvels of the day....... No telling.
