17 K’s. Almost didn’t need fielders in this one. Nice W. Angels are losing 4-3 right now😎 Luis Valbuena just tied it up.

And now Angels lead 5-4. I don’t think they’re going away this season.

This red-haired Middleton is the fellow who hit Andrus in the elbow.
Honestly, if the Rangers has had Andrus, Deshields, and Odor today, they may well have won.

Giles has to be asking himself what is going on. If he has a brain, he should be figuring out that Hinch is not going to trust him at this point. He hasn't been much better than he was in the playoffs last year.

He hasn't been much better than he was in the playoffs last year. His best bet is probably to accept the role of middle reliever and try to earn the right to pitch in high-leverage (incl. Late & Close) situations again.

Three runs off the Rangers, one of them unearned. This offense needs to wake up.

precisely. If I were a baseball team owner, I'd put that right in the contract. "This contract may be terminated by the team if the player lollygags".

I can't help but think that the Astros would have gotten more offense last night had Reddick played OF in Marisnick's place. Maybe Hinch's rationale was that last season, Marisnick hit for a .817 OPS vs lefties while Reddick hit .762. However, one also has to consider the more general issue of who's hot and who's not. Right now, Reddick is hot and Jake is not. Maybe Jake never can be a hot hitter again. With 6 years in the bigs now, I don't think Jake can be optioned down to the minors any more (meaning, there's no point in saying "Well let's just send Jake to Fresno", Contractually, it can't happen.)

Yes. Jake can still be optioned to the minor leagues. He has 2 options left. The difference now, with his accumulated years in pro ball, is that he has the right to refuse the option and become a free agent, rather than reporting to the minor league team. So contractually it can happen.

So contractually it can happen. Thanks for pointing that out. I thought players could only be optioned in their first 5 years in the majors. I never could figure out the intricacies of player contracts very well. In practice, I bet Marisnick would refuse the minor league assignment. But I guess we can't be sure.

In practice, I bet Marisnick would refuse the minor league assignment. But I guess we can't be sure. Marisnick is a relic of past needs. Back in 2015, the Astros needed him to be the starting CF because he was the best option. He hasn’t been that in years, yet he still hangs around for some reason. I don’t care if Hudgens thinks Jake is about to break out or whatever. He’s had three years to show what he’s made of and has not been that star player everyone hoped he’d become. Quite frankly, he’s simply wasting a roster spot that could go to someone more deserving. I just wish someone in the minors would heat up and wrestle it from him.

Astrodoug, the “option” rule can get very complicated. I just went back and looked at Jake’s ML and MILB service time and I’m not sure he could refuse an assignment. A player with 5 years or more of “major league” service time can refuse an option and become a free agent. I think in order to be credited with a tear of ML service time a player has to be on the active roster of a ML team for 172 days in a season. I don’t think Jake met that requirement in 2013, did he? Anyway, you are right, considering his total years of “professional” service time he can’t be sent to the minor leagues without first being placed on irrevocable waivers and clearing waivers first. So, if I understand the process correctly (and I’m not sure I do) Jake could still be optioned to the minor leagues, but he would have to clear waivers first...and since he doesn’t have 5 years of “major league” service, he could not refuse the assignment.
