Do any of you men know anything about GM's current engines? I'm looking for information comparing the LGX 3.6L to the 2.0T(urbo) in the 2019 model year vehicles.
Of course, I know the basics of a 6 cyl vs. a 4 cyl regarding horsepower, fuel efficiency, etc., but is there anything about these powerplants that I should know about?

He needs to know the struggles.

I would not buy him a new truck. I was 30 years old and deep into 2 careers before I got my first new vehicle. I especially would not buy him a $50000 new truck. Get him a 1996 Ford Ranger.

Make sure it's a single cab so the girls have to sit up close with him. Just saying.

What truck should I get for my son? He will be 16 in June next year. I am looking at the 2019 silverado. I have always been a Ford man so this is a tough one. Look at the bigger picture. Your son is a good kid, you're proud of him and you want to reward him. All good stuff but remember that a vehicle represents freedom. Sudden freedom is not necessarily a good thing. Peer-pressure (his friends) are likely to coerce him into making some bad decisions, especially if he has his own vehicle. Adding another vehicle to the family fleet might be in order, but just handing it over to your son probably isn't the best choice in the beginning. What are you driving? What is your wife driving? Maybe you should be looking at a new (or newer than what you have now) vehicle for your wife or yourself. This will free up one of those vehicles which would be the default, when he asks to use one of the family vehicles. Maybe driving himself to and from school each day in it would be a normal thing but using it for other purposes could be on an ask basis? Most kids will be very grateful to just have access to a vehicle of any kind. And if that vehicle is dependable but perhaps a bit shopworn, it won't be a major crisis if one of his klutzy friends spills his coke on the carpet. For special occasions, maybe you can let him borrow yours or your wife's. For instance taking a nice girl to the homecoming dance or something. Give him a couple of years to prove he's responsible. When he graduates HS, maybe that's the time to give him his own vehicle. Maybe even a new one, or maybe just something decent and dependable. Anyway, that's my opinion. Take it for what it's worth. YMMV. ... oh and ... BUY A FORD!

Nothing wrong with a Hank Hill type vehicle. I was thinking a Red Forman type vehicle, but that would work too.

First car was a '62 VW Beetle, white with red tuck-n-roll interior. I think my dad and I paid $2200 for it. Sold it a few years later for over 3k. I don't know much about the new GM engines, but if it's an AFM (active fuel management) engine (that uses spring-loaded lifters and tiny servo motors) I've had two of them and they were both good engines until the lifters stuck in the down position. Yukons don't like to run on 7 cylinders. Expensive fix. I deleted the system and it now runs on 8 cylinders all the time.
Abreg, I would't buy your kid a new truck. I know I sound hypocritical since I bought my daughter a new car, but I kinda got trapped into that (long story). BUT, females usually don't test the limits of vehicles the way boys do. You especially don't give a teenage boy a muscle car. I've dealt with parents who made that mistake more than once.

My first car was a 1985 Ford Bronco that had a rusted out tailgate and manual everything with no working AC. But, it had a hugeass engine and was 4x4 with a removable top. I loved it to death. I bought it for $1200 with money I had saved mowing lawns and doing other manual labor around the neighborhood. I spent months pouring through ads in the Chronicle and finally found/bought it a month after I turned 16. I only sold it because I needed something that got better gas mileage to drive to college. It was the most redneck vehicle ever and looked completely out of place driving through Alief. Best vehicle ever.
Buying my own first vehicle was one of my proudest moments, and keeping it running with my dad helping and teaching me about it was something I will always remember. Lots of good memories and stories about that vehicle.
I think kids will appreciate it more if they put their own heart and work into it, personally. My plan is to match whatever money my daughter (and son when he's born) put up towards a vehicle. That way they can get something a little nicer than they could on their own, but they still have a lot of vested emotions in it to take care of it and be responsible. Hopefully.

Red Firman also had a beautiful Corvette. Yes he did. But before that ...
