Stromfather needs to wiggle his nose before JV loses his CYA.

You two dare to mock The Stromfather?!?!? Yes, people act like he is Jesus Christ reincarnate. That would be a bit much but he's got total respect of the players. Some are wearing shirts that say the Stromfather. Dallas keuchel said that he deserves the credit for his success.... Look how he is up the game for both Verlander and Cole. look what he does with McHugh, Peacock, Miley just almost anyone on the team....Bortaz takes credit away from for Devo, but I think he's done pretty well with Devo.... Verlander said that the Astros organization as a whole just really breaks down and analyzes everything about the pitcher: from the grip, arch angle, pretty much anything. He said he's never seen or heard a team like the Astros that gets in so much depth/derails about everything.

Is he hurt? What's going on with all the long balls? Strange timing. Big topic at this morning's Coffee Klatch...... My crowd of a about a dozen was (if I remember right) split by..... 50%- Lapses in pitch placement vs. his normal spectaular ability. 40% - Complacency with Astros offense, leading to loss of focus. 10% - Old and starting to lose it. I argued the pitch placement angle.

thomasj13 The problem is, you devotees heap all of the praise on him for the successes, but none of the blame for the failures. No one mentions Strom when talking about Cionel imploding, Framber imploding, McHugh cratering as a starter, Devo sucking, Rondon sucking, James and his struggles, peacock crashing, the inability to fix the issues with Keuchel that got so bad only Todd wanted to re-sign him, etc etc.

Yuuuuup. Strom was holding him down, apparently.

Cionel, Framber and James are either rookies or basically ones. I think Peacock and McHugh have done well under Strom, but as we have seen, they are best suited for a relier role. I have not given up on Devo...Rondon, you are right on this one.... Given the Astros lost Morton, Keuchel, McCullers...and have pitched Guduan this year...plus pitching rookies and journeyman The Astros Pitchers are ranked ERA - 4TH WHIP - 2ND SO- 2ND BAA-2ND TB-6TH Their big weakness has been the long ball - HRA- 26TH But all in all given the circumstances, I think Strom has done a heck of a job... And if you recall last year the Astros were ERA - 1ST WHIP-1ST SO - 1ST BAA-1ST HRA - 2ND TB-1ST

Morton /=/ most pitchers Without looking I would think Cole falls into that category...and Verlander, and his fountain of youth, has done well. Miley, outside of ERA, is having a better than last year, and that was his best career year....both Osuna and Pressly have gotten better.

A lot of those guys problems .....especially Perez. Guduan, and James.....could be due to their emotions. McHugh and Peacock had lost command of the slider which both need to be successful. Keuchel's problems were his own......hitters figured him out and umpires stopped giving him pitches out of the zone. When he had to pitch in the zone, he got hammered. Strom had a lot to do with Morton's success and then Luhnow made a mistake and let him go to the Rays. Morton would look great in our rotation.

Glad I had to miss last night's game to avoid yet another barrage of homers against Verlander. When I heard about it, I was reminded of his start right before the break last year when the Tigers hammered him.

Verlander is too aggressive with the fastball. His approach up high is fine, but he needs to work the corners more too. Can't let them get comfortable up high all the time.

Just bad luck. Fly balls are fly balls and an unusually high number of his have left the park. IIRC, Steve Carlton led the league in HR allowed more than once. Many outstanding pitchers have had spikes of allowing lots of HRs.

Many outstanding pitchers have had spikes of allowing lots of HRs. Very true. All the detractors fail to mention... (All MLB) Rank in wins - tied for 3rd ERA- 9th K's- 3rd WHIP- 1st QS- 4th HR's also mean that his control is great, maybe too good. Like I said in another thread, I think his normally uncanny pitch placement has been just a tad off this season. Knowing the abiltiy of JV, this will correct itself.
