www.startattle.com/2019/07/ball-four-author-jim-bouton-dead-at-80-cause-of-death/Jim Bouton, former Astro, and several other teams died to today at age 80 of Alzheimers. Many of us older Astros fans, remember Bouton, not as much as what he did on the field, but what he wrote about in his very successful 1st Book "Ball Four", and other subsequent novels. I have very vivid memories of Ball Four. As a 12 (maybe 13) year old, I got a rogue copy of this book for reading. Like many kids, "Adult themed" books for forbidden for my reading, so this copy was held and read in strict secrecy. I mean this was 1970. Maybe no single book shocked me more than this one in my youth. Even at 13, I was a 6 year fan of the game, and thought the players were sterling, good, perfect guys who were heros to us all. But then again, I lived in that era of long ago past, that things controversial, or sorid were basically kept from the general public. In any case, RIP Mr. Bouton. Your book drove out a lot of my naivety of youth, and my heros of the time... Doug Rader, Joe Morgan, Larry Dierker, all seemed human ..... or even less than so.

It was almost a grieving process for me when I found out many of the players I admired weren't exactly Sunday School teachers. Eventually the naivete of youth is torn away by something, then you're forced into the sucky world of being an adult. The bills in the box have YOUR name on them, etc. I didn't know how wonderful my life was when the hardest part of my day was running laps at Pony League practice.

I watched my mom’s good health taken from her by Alzheimers over a period of 12 years after she was diagnosed. It is a hard thing to see your mom’s good health taken away. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I appreciate it, every one of you. As you grow older you see more and more people who were a part of your life exit this world. Life is far too short. Good health is usually even shorter.

That's the truth. After my dad died, it was like someone opened a dam. Over the last 10 years i have lost a brother, my lifelong best friend, a 10 year old niece (and now her dad a few years later), and a good half dozen friends, classmates, and family members. All the while, my elderly mother's health is worse every day. Made particularly difficult by the fact that I live a 10 hour drive away from her.

My parents are both the last of their families. I lost my last 3 grandparents and 14 aunts/uncles in a 15 year span. But I've been fortunate. Both my parents are 90 and have cared for themselves since the youngest (me) left. Living into the 90s is pretty common in my family. Mom has lost function of her left side, can't turn her head to the left and her right carotid is stacked with clots. Speech and vision are altered. Big MCA CVA involving the frontal, parietal and occipital portions of the brain. But that's enough of this depressing stuff.
