The combination of an Astros victory and a Mariners defeat eliminates Seattle from the division race. That magic number is 2.

22 for the division, essentially.

Well, I’m sorry. The Mariners have been eliminated. It’s a four-team race for first place now.

Doesn't seem that long ago we were singing "The Season's over by June Blues", and most important date on the team calendar was September 1st.

The Angels have lost the divisional race and join the Mariners. It’s a three-team race now. The magic number against the Rangers is 2. If the Astros and Yankees both win today, Texas is knocked out.

I still want to see the Yankees lose. Ditto. The Astros winning the next two games knocks out the Rangers. The scenario I described merely speeds up the process.

With a loss tonight, the Rangers will be eliminated from the race for the American League West. Only the Astros and Athletics will remain.

Since this thread has been started the Astros are playing like the one getting eliminated. This team plays so uninspired sometimes. It makes me worry about the postseason. So many of them go cold simultaneously.

Magic # is only 12 to lock up the division. Houston would have to go 11-9 then Oakland would have to run the table (21-0) to take us.
What surprised me more than anything is Minnesota still only 4 losses away from us. HOW!?

Also the Twins play a lot of games with the Tigers, and to a lesser extent the White Sox.

The AL West is the only American League Division above 500 for the year.

Down to 4. A’s blew a late lead to the Royals and lost 6-5.

If not against the Rangers, it will be done at home this week.

While the magic number for the division is 4 and dependent upon the A’s, the magic number for a simple postseason berth is 2 and dependent upon the Indians. If they lose to the Tigers and the Astros beat the Rangers tonight, our boys clinch it.

Kills me that there are four sub .400 teams in AL now, and as many as 6 > .600 teams by seasons end. We are turning into the NBA, jr.

Blue Jays taking 2/3 from the Tanks this past weekend should give hope; but also a warning, a bad team can beat a really good team.
