I could see Sanchez being non-tendered. The team holds a $2.625 million club option on Devenski for 2020. I don’t see the team exercising that option. I could see him being non-tendered. I can see Biagini being non-tendered. All of those guys can be replaced with minimum salary players. I think Jake will be traded and replaced by Straw. Straw can also back up at SS and 2B. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Diaz traded and replaced by Toro. Toro can back up at 1B, 2B and 3B.
If Correa is traded, Toro can take over at 3B with Bregman moving to SS. In this scenario Tanielu could replace Diaz in the utility infielder role.
I like thomas13’s idea to re-sign Chirinos and have Stubbs as his backup in 2020.
It is going to be an interesting offseason for sure.

I am for re-signing Chirinos to a 2 year/$10M deal, if he would take it. Stubbs should be the back-up catcher. That would be the biggest OS other contract, if the Astros could somehow pull off re-signing Cole. Re-signing Cole would probably prohibit doing anything with Springer until after next season. If Astros don't re-sign Cole, then Luhnow can go after Wheeler and go ahead extend Springer. *Still need to trade Reddick and Correa. I would do a 1-year contract for $6-8 million with an option year if he meets certain marks. I would be for that too.

At his age and position I'm just hesitant about multiple years guaranteed, even if it isn't that much money. Especially for a position player that won't play much more than 100 games in a season. And I still say, as you and others have, if the team decides to move Correa in the offseason, as they should, it should be for pitching and a young respectable catcher with club control for a few years. (Somebody like Carson Kelly, for example.)

I don't know that we can count on McCullers to stay healthy unless he is in the bullpen, and I'm not sure if Miley can actually repeat his performance even if we did bring him back. I'm worried it will be Verlander-Greinke-Mediocre FA-?-? with no depth. Our offense should be similarly good, and I feel we have a good amount of depth and utility on the bench. Our bullpen is also questionable after Pressly and Osuna. I trust Luhnow to get us what we need. No one thought we would have Greinke this season. Ahem...

Borg aged better: I don't know... This is supposed to be one of the most recent Jolene Blaylock photos (Enterprise - T'Pol) Saline ages well.

Chirinos has done enough to deserve a two-year deal. He and Verlander work well together so don't mess with that. Stubbs should be the back-up. I am for giving Cole just about whatever it takes to re-sign him. Keeping him, Verlander, and Greinke as our top 3 gives us the best top 3 in the game. I think Tucker is ready to replace Reddick and I just want Correa gone.

The mindset of paying people for what they've done, rather than for what they are likely to do is what has gotten baseball contracts/free agency in the bind they're now in. Do you really think it's a good idea to give a guaranteed 2-year deal to a 35 year old catcher who has never played more than 113 games in a season? I'm good with another 1-year deal with an option 2nd year at best.

We paid him $5.75 million this year on top of the $1 million he got from Texas. edit: And he gets to play with Hall of Famers and go to the postseason with a real team.

I remember a time long. long ago in a galaxy far, far away when the playoff check actually was a pretty good incentive to play on a good team. Now it's a quaint symbolic gesture.

The pitchers.......especially Verlander.....give him credit for helping them be successful. Plus, tell me when was the last time we had a catcher who hit 17 home runs and drove in 56 runs on top of doing a great job of handling pitchers. For these reasons., Chirinos has earned a two-year deal with a raise.

Pay people for what you think they'll contribute, not for what they already have. That's what incentive bonuses are for if he had had that worked into his deal. Nobody is arguing that he didn't have a productive season for us, and, if he was 3-4 years younger, I'd probably agree with the contract idea, but he's old for a catcher. I wouldn't want to throw too much guaranteed money at him because of that reason. We have enough people that are owed a ton of money starting next year and you yourself have already said to pay Cole whatever he wants. You can't pay everybody a ton of money. It doesn't work that way.

I thought losing Keuchel would tax our pen more than it did. But we're 23rd in bullpen innings this year, compared to ranking 29th last year

Regardless of the situation, postseason games tend to see more pitches above 95 MPH Since the Dodgers and Twins have been very good against fastballs 95+ this season while we and the Rays have been very poor, this is where I'm worried

We have Altuve and Bregman under control and extendind Springer solidifis our group of core players. Alvarez is worth much more than we have to pay him for awhile. Tucker will be a bargain replacing Reddick. You spend money on what it takes to win because you suffer financially as an organization if you start losing. We have the financial resources to stay strong.

Arizona is paying part of Greinke's salary. We are getting Springer this year for $12 million which is a bargain. Cole is making $13.5 million which is a steal. Springer should get twice what he's making now, if not more, on a new contract. It will take close to tripling Cole's salary to keep him. We can drop $16 million by trading Reddick. I agree we would have a high payroll, but, I think it would be taken care of by increased ticket and merchandise sales. Plus, we don't know when more TV revenue could enter the picture. This franchise is increasing in value by the year so Crane can afford to write big cbecks for top talent. We will be getting Tucker and Alvarez practicaly free. If we replace a Diaz with Toro or another young infielder, we lose Diaz's salary and I'm sure we will let Rondon and his $4.5 million paycheck go. I do agree with replacing Jake with Straw.......don't pass out.

Those guys alone next year will make about $135 million, and that doesn't count the $20 or so we'll have to pay from Greinke. Plus you owe Gurriel 8, so now you're up to $160+ and you haven't touched the bullpen salaries, the bench, or the catching situation (and we're assuming we offload Reddick's and Correa's salaries somehow). I just don't see it happening.
