I would love to see us sign Springer to an extension and bring in Bumgarner. I love Cole, but he is as good as gone.

So outside of a catcher, I don't think we need to look at any free agent position players for next year. Even if we trade Correa or Reddick, etc. (not likely) we have enough depth to get by just fine for another year.
So with the question marks in the rotation and the bullpen but semi-limited funds, who do you look at to add?
Remember, we're possibly/likely losing:
Cole Harris Smith Rondon McHugh
I think they should look at both Smith and Harris as possible candidates to bring back. While they'll possibly command decent money based on their excellent postseason work, they're both up there in age and may not be TOO bad. Rondon and McHugh are hard passes for me.
I again think they need to look at Gio Gonzalez. He started 17 games last year with a 3.50 ERA (127 ERA+) for only $2 million. I think he would be a super cheap but effective depth piece to the rotation.

We don't need to keep paying him to sit out at least half of the season. I would try to deal Reddick and turn RF over to Tucker. Do they plan to work Yordan into being a position player? If so, where? If they can convert him into a first baseman, I can see moving Yuli to third and putting Bregman at SS if Correa is traded. I would make a solid attempt at re-signing Harris., Let Rondon and McHugh walk. As for free agent catchers, I stand firm that we should bring back Chirinos with a good raise in pay. It will be interesting to see what happens with Cole. I think Luhnow and Crane go after him ,but, it all depends on how badly he wants to win and stay in Houston or going to California and lose with the Angels or Padres.

I think before we dig too deep into the offseason we need to see what nathangarza has to say.

If we explored a trade for Correa this off season (not saying it would happen), who would be his replacement?
A- Move Bregman over to ss full time and maybe Yuli back to 3b (moving Alvarez to 1b or look for another) B- Didi Gregorius at ss C- Other and who?

Whew, I don't think Straw is a legitimate replacement for Karla.

Whew, I don't think Straw is a legitimate replacement for Karla. He wasn't bad there in his first stint. I'm just saying it's an option to consider.

Whew, I don't think Straw is a legitimate replacement for Karla. Straw is not close to being a replacement for Karla. Unless someone is brought in, Bregman is the logical choice at SS.

We all remember when voodoo wanted us to sign Bryce Harper......Funny that the Nats go to the WS the season after they let him go. I have always thought Harper was a prima donna and cancer in the clubhouse. The Phillies signed him and got voodoo's boy, Realmutol, thinking they would win. Phillies lose and the Nats go to the WS. Evidence that you have to watch who you spend millions to sign. Our signing of Brantley was a huge plus.

Will Diaz be back next season? He will unless we trade him......He won't be a FA until 2023 and he only makes $2.4 million per year.

If Correa were to be traded this offseason (and I really don’t think that will happen), Toro at 3B and Bregman at SS would more than adequate, IMO.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Luhnow sign Drew Pomeranz to be our LHP out of the bullpen. His numbers as a relief pitcher in 2019 as well as for his career are very good.... much better than his numbers as a starter. He shouldn’t be too expensive. He made $1.5 million in 2018 and $2 million in 2019.

Whew, I don't think Straw is a legitimate replacement for Karla. I don't think so either, he could be a super utility player. Or CF.

The biggest problem that we have is that we have to cut payroll even without signing Cole.
To cut the payroll I would do the following;
Trade Correa and restock the minors somewhat, Bregman to ss and Toro to third Trade Reddick and give rf to Tucker, if he falls on his face move Brantley over and start Alvarez in left Convince McCullers he needs to be our closer and trade Osuna Now we have an extra 30 million to play with and with that we can; sign Harris and Smith to come back for two more years, sign MadBum and or Wheeler, sign both of our catchers for another year or two. look for a reclamation project or two to mold back into shape.

Now that the season is over. What will our first move be? Hopefully revamp our bullpen. I can think of about 5 things right off the bat.

The offense needs to move on from Correa. He’s injured and battered.

Time to do some retooling. If Tucker and Straw are not ready for the big show now, they never will be. The same can be said about Stubbs. There is no need to waste another year of any of those guy’s pro career by having them at AAA. Luhnow needs to find a way to move Reddick this offseason. The team will have to eat some of the $13 million owed to him in 2020 and/or send some prospects along with him in order to move him. Whatever it takes, he needs to go now to make room for Tucker. Marisnick needs to go to make room for Straw. Stubbs should be given a shot at one of the catcher slots on the roster.
Abraham Toro looks to be ready. He has hit well with runners in scoring position in the minor leagues. Even if he struggles a bit at first, I am confident that he can produce enough with the bat to replace the half season we would get from Correa. Carlos has two seasons left before he becomes a free agent in 2022. Luhnow should be able to get a decent return for him in a trade. Trade him, move Bregman to SS and install Toro at 3B.
Bryan Abreu should make the 2020 OD roster. Whitley? Who knows? Cristian Javier, Tyler Ivey and Brandon Bielak should start the season at AAA and make their ML debut at some point during the season.
I would like to see Luhnow sign Pomeranz for a LH pitcher in the bullpen. Wouldn’t mind seeing Luhnow re-sign Joe Smith and Harris. Would like to see Luhnow sign Wheeler to replace Cole.
Would like to see the team put less emphasis on launch angles and more emphasis on hitting the ball where they ain’t.

Would like to see the team put less emphasis on launch angles and more emphasis on hitting the ball where they ain’t. It’s painfully obvious that the team needs to retool. It’s time to break up the DP tandem and move Correa. He is too often injured, and it’s affecting his defense and a little of his offense. Gurriel has been fantastic for us but is only getting older. Springer must be extended. This is imperative. Whitley or McCullers needs to step up and be the next ace. Greinke is a #3 at this point and Verlander is more of a #2 at this stage in his career. There’s a lot to be done to keep this going, but it can easily regress further without the right moves.

I believe that Verlander is showing some age, and is running out of gas by the the 3rd round of playoffs. Thus contributing to his 0-6 WS record.

Name a number 1 you'd put ahead of Verlander (and consider what he did this season...low, low ERA, 300 SO, a no hitter, likely CYA (2nd place, at worst), and on and on.)
You're crazy if you really think JV is number 2 to anyone. You're letting his couple of bad starts at the end of a long season color your opinion because your feelings are hurt.

Cole was never going to stay. Some of us said that from the beginning. He's going to get a huge payday back playing closer to home. He did well for us and I wish him the best. Hopefully he doesn't move to an AL west team where we have to face him multiple times.

I think he’s pretty pissed about Game 7 and being passed up in favor of Harris.
