I don't understand how foreign matter on the ball increases the spin rate. Intuition says the opposite is true That would be picked up so quickly how they watch in this day and age. Remember all the hand motions and body motions Gaylord Perry used. Not to mention the fact that the home plate umpire is constantly looking at the used baseballs and deciding whether to keep them in the game or throw them out. If he starts seeing suspicious pine tar stains, he would know something's up. |
