We also got a catching prospect by the name of Yanier Diaz. Anyone know anything about him?

Numbers look good. But 22 seems a little old for a single A player.

I guess this means the story about Crane not being concerned with money was a lie.

Straw wasn't the long term answer in CF, but, we shouldn't have given him away.

Straw was never going to be a long-term solution and we had probably seen the best he was going to be. I guess Click felt like the Straw/McCormick combo wasn't as good as the McCormick/Meyers combo. Meyers has some pop. Why didn’t they have Meyers on the roster instead then? This move perplexes me. It's all about who you need and when you need them. You can't just remove players from the 40 and keep them. You can lose good young players via waivers that way. When outfielders were needed, Straw and McCormick were the logical choices at that time. Meyers was finishing his transition from pitcher to outfielder. There wasn't a pressing need for an additional outfielder until this trade. Meanwhile 40-man slots were being used to shuttle relievers up and down to try to figure out who might be useful. Plus spaces needed for injured players not on the DL-40 and their temporary replacements like Toro and Garcia.

Nah, you've been hammering Lance even while he leads the starters in ERA. All I ever defended about Marisnick was his defense. I always said he sucked as a hitter. But, some said he was the worst player in baseball. An elite defensive OF can't be the worst player in the game. I'd put Robel in the top 5 in that category.

I don't mind losing Straw. I just thought it might be for something more or part of a series of something more.

Meyers has some pop. I just looked at the numbers of Chas and Meyers thus far this season. They are both right-handed batters. Chas has better numbers vs RHPs than he does vs LHPs. Meyers has good numbers vs righties and lefties, but his power numbers vs lefties are much better. He has 7 HRs in 78 ABs vs lefties.... a HR every 11 ABs. Not bad. He has 9 HRs in 193 ABs vs righties... a HR every 21 ABs. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Meyers getting his starts vs lefties while Chas starts against righties.

I didn’t like this trade. But you also didn't like Straw. I liked his improved defense and his speed. I didn’t like his power, but that wasn’t enough for him to be tossed away for yet another reliever when they already have three closers in the bullpen. If he were traded for a better bat or for starting pitching, it would have made more sense.

I don’t think he got taken. He’s a big boy. I just think he should’ve used a fraction of the patience Luhnow had for the inferior Marisnick.

You could turn out to be right but it's way too early to know that. Houston has taken pitchers who had problems and turned them into dominant players before, and this Maton kid has great stuff. I'll wager that he turns into a better reliever in an Astros uni. They transformed Morton and Cole, so let's just see what happens. Who knows what the single-A catcher will turn out to be.

That's what I hoped for Maldonado and Castro. They had the potential to be a pretty solid offensive dup with strong defense (in different areas). Unfortunately Dusty doesn't seem to care.

You and this other guy just can't let Marisnick rest even after he's been gone for nearly two years. And, for the record, Jake was and is a superior defensive CF when compared to Straw.

It looks like they only intend to play Castro when Odorizzi pitches and he seems to always pitch against a lefty so Castro faces lefties most of the time. There is little doubt if given the same amount of playing time that Castro would produce more offensively than Maldonado, whose strength is working with the pitchers, especially the Hispanics. I like him catching McCullers because he does a good job on the low breaking balls.

No doubt Strom had a great deal of input on acquiring him.
