The salary cap has been kicked up 20mm for this year. Given McCullers situation who makes sense to bring in/back on a short term deal to cover those early season innings, Grienke/Rondon? How about the bullpen, that still needs some help. Does spending more money on Carlos now make sense. He will now be better off with the larger cap. Lots of questions now. The next two weeks will be very interesting.

The guy they get to help McFragile's workload is usually an unspectacular signing like Odorizzi. It'd be someone like Folty or one of the Andersons

I wonder if signing a more high profile reliever might be money better spent. They could possibly test out some minor league guys as well. You are right just signing some slug to eat innings makes little sense.

Andrelton Simmons to the Cubs. Cross him off of our potential replacement lists, and the Cubs as a Correa destination.

Would y’all be down for a McHugh return? For sure. He has been a great relief pitcher since moving to that role. He had a 1.55 ERA in 64 innings last year. It sounds like the Red Sox are the team most interested.

Also there is a possibility they could move Brantley to a NL team to save some cash and increase there offer to Correa. Astros could also be heavily after Reynolds of the Pirates

The thought would be he isn't a regular OFer anymore and his bat does the job. This could make a splash signing like Bryant happen

Roster Resource estimates that, after the Goodrum signing, the Astros 2022 payroll for luxury tax purposes sits just above $195 million. With the first luxury tax threshold being set at $230, the Astros have the wiggle room to sign Correa to the kind of deal he wants without paying the luxury tax ...., if they are willing to pay him that kind of money.

I've always thought it was the years and not the AAV that would separate the Astros and Correa. We're about to find out if that's true.
I'm betting they don't re-sign him for that reason. I am expecting a good reliever pickup or two though.
Considering McCullers' history of not pitching big innings + JV coming back from TJS, I would not at all be shocked to see a decent SP pickup, especially if they can dump Odorizzi on somebody. Maybe even a Greinke re-up.

I've always thought it was the years and not the AAV that would separate the Astros and Correa. We're about to find out if that's true. The previous offer by the Astros was $160MM / 5-years (AAV $32MM). That falls short on both AAV and years from what Correa is demanding. But You're right in that it's a lot closer in AAV than years. The Goodrum signing complicates things for Pena. Especially if they sign Correa.

I’m wondering if the Goodrum signing might be the prelude to a trade of Diaz. Could be. At $2.1MM for Niko and (projected) $4MM for Aledmys, I think it's a bad move in the short term. Goodrum is okay, but $2MM more for Diaz gets you a LOT more bang for the buck. I dunno if the Astros would be looking to get someone decent in their pipeline for a year or two from now, or if the intent is right-now like bolstering the pen. Diaz is FA for 2023.

Diaz and Goodrum can spot start as Pena gets acclimated at SS. If it doesn't work out, there are some really good FA shortstops next year: Turner, Swanson and Bogaerts has $20M player option that I'm sure he would not exercise.

I’m cool with Goodrum replacing Díaz. Díaz was alright except that unusually reliable stretch last season, which was followed by a painfully cold streak. Both play a role essential to the team with less of a necessity for high production, but if Goodrum is cheaper then I don’t see why Díaz is too essential to deal. Plus, one utility player is enough.
