Is this 10th of a season immediate sign of decline or just a slump?
On one hand, his .550 OPS now is horrific, as is his RBI production which has always been his calling card. He's currently riding an 0-12 with 0 walks.
On the other hand, before the road trip he was hitting .345 with a .406 OBP and only 5 Ks in 7 games. Heck, before the Texas series he was hitting .291 with a .339 OBP.
Before this year, his average exit velocity over the past 5 seasons was 92mph. This year it's currently down to 86mph. His hard hit % is down from 49% for his career (52% last year) to 36%. All of these lead me to believe it's just a slump. While his HR numbers were down in 2022, his exit velocity and hard hit rates were as good or better than they've ever been. This amount of drop off is extreme.
I think he'll bounce back and be fine. (Unless he's hurt and hiding it.)
The good news, is that his "clutch stats" are still really good:
2 outs w/ RISP: .308 AVG .819 OPS Late & Close: .364 AVG .818 OPS
As for his defense, he just won't be as good as Yuli from a scooping standpoint.

Don’t know what his problem is, but I do know he’s killing us with his Maldonado impression in the cleanup spot. A “slugging” 1b who doesn’t slug is useless, and that adjective pretty much sums up his contributions to date. Certainly I’m rooting for the guy and I’m hopeful that his future contributions suck less than they have so far.
P.S. His glove and range have been, to the naked eye, lackluster at best.

The sad part is that Maldonado has actually been better than him overall so far this year.

I'm not sure we should panic over 16 games' worth of production.

I'm not sure we should panic over 16 games' worth of production. Well that was the point of the post. Its kind of a slumpbuster.

I'm not giving up on Abreu. I just figure we need a little fairy dust if we're gonna expect 25 HR and 90 RBI from him

I'm not sure we should panic over 16 games' worth of production. Nah, not panic. Just a 10%-of-the season observation. He looks tentative to me. But the season is long an he’s got plenty of time to do well.

I haven’t had the opportunity to watch him when he was with the WS so I don’t know if this extraordinarily slow start is something he’s done before. But I can tell you he’s registered close to 100 ABs and I have yet to see him pull the ball with any authority, look comfortable at the plate, or take a swing that didn’t look like a struggling hitter simply seeking contact. Essentially he’s a less productive Dubon at the moment. I really hope this dude hasn’t completely lost it because with each passing game I can’t see much advancement in his bat-to-ball skills. He needs to show some power soon.

Yuli had a bad 2023, but he left us with a great postseason. That’s what makes Abreu’s crappy performance so bad because he was the slightly younger powerful replacement.

Oh, I own that. All I wanted was more production from 1B, which I don’t think we’ve received yet.

To his credit I actually saw him take a couple of aggressive hacks today.

I wonder how much bp this guy takes, he looks thoroughly overwhelmed at the plate, especially with curve balls. Watching him hold his bat on the bench and hitting his head after striking out is disturbing. At this point, I'd almost be tempted to send him down to AAA just to let him get some kind of groove going and get some confidence.

I’m no baseball hitting savant, but it’s hard to see Abreu hitting for power using just his upper body to swing.

Im guessing he can't tee off and use his lower body because he doesn't seem to see the pitch well at all, thus every thing is a half swing. Maybe he needs glasses.

He sucks. And is absolutely killing us. He's on-pace for negative 4.2 WAR. That is a special level of suck.

I guess he isn't hurt after all. I've never seen such immediate excessive decline without a health issue. Does anyone else remember an example like this?

Beltrán never ranked in the bottom 5 in OPS among qualified batters that year. Brian said this is a new level of suck, and it bears repeating
