Detroit with a solid move today. Got one year of Mark Canha at less than $12 million in salary almost for free (middling 25-year-old reliever who wasn't even ranked in Detroit's mediocre farm system). Canha is coming off his sixth-straight season of being at least 10% better than league average with the stick and hitting double digit home runs (aside from the weird 2020 small number of games).

Neris declined his player option, as expected. Probably looking for Montero money.

What small market team has Ausmus led to a division title? Detroit. Detroit is small market? Why aren’t you applying the “Dusty won with Hinch’s guys” theory like when Ausmus won with Leyland’s?

I wonder if Dusty's insistent use of Maldonado caused a clash with Brown. My guess that it did and that was another reason Dusty isn't back.

Way overdue. Glad Dana got that out there and made it clear Maldy’s days are numbered. Watch him re-sign as “the backup”. Th only thing he needs to back up is his truck to the clubhouse door while emptying his locker.

I wonder if Dusty's insistent use of Maldonado caused a clash with Brown. My guess that it did and that was another reason Dusty isn't back. It did as I recall. Brown revealed to one of the reporters the reason he put Salazar on the roster was so Yainer could get at-bats at DH, and Dusty could sub for Maldy in later innings at the same time. Brown to his credit I'm sure complained to Crane about roster management first, Yainer's development getting stunted being the concern. Crane likely mentioned it in a conversation with Baker at some point, and it probably signaled to the old man his time was up

www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/11/npbs-orix-buffaloes-approve-posting-of-yoshinobu-yamamoto.html"Scouts have widely regarded Yamamoto as a starter with top-of-the-rotation potential in MLB. Prior to the 2023 season, scouts suggested to Joel Sherman of the New York Post that Yamamoto could be considered a “full grade” ahead of right-hander Kodai Senga, who landed with the Mets on a five-year, $75MM pact last offseason in his first foray into stateside ball. Senga’s age-30 rookie season in MLB proved to be an excellent one, as he posted a 2.98 ERA and 3.63 FIP while striking out 202 batters in 166 1/3 innings of work. Needless to say, the idea of an ace nearly six years Senga’s junior widely regarded as the better pitcher of the two being available via free agency this offseason has to be nothing short of tantalizing for MLB clubs."

Anybody read the article with Ohtani saying one of his preferred teams was the Rangers. Though the Dodgers are way up there too

Eddie Rosario expected to have his club option declined. Solid left-handed hitter with 25-30 HR power and a solid defender in LF. Could be a decent option if Crane makes Brown go bargain hunting.

The Astros had enough problems getting on base in the postseason. I don't know how much Crane is willing to spend. It sounds like not much. We've been hearing about relievers and a backup catcher being the targets. I'm looking at options that would be an upgrade over Dubon starting out there at this point. And Rosario certainly would be.

Ah, the age-old question of spending. Dubón isn’t a starter but fills the Marwin role of multipositional bench help. If Rosario can do that, he can be an asset.

But I'm not advocating for us to replace Dubon, just that he actually is used as a bench guy. He started way too many games last year, some out of necessity. Rosario isn't excellent but I'd much rather see a bat like that in the lineup regularly than Dubon.

Whether this is an accurate description of Baggy's role, picking the manager isn't that significant of an organizational move that fans with this perspective are making it out to be. All managers for the most part are competent to a degree and have foibles that annoy us to a degree. Rarely there's a candidate one can point to and say we would've won the pennant if that guy was available I see a manager as a reflection of team philosophy rather than having a significant on-field impact. What I’d look for more in the role is mainly more of a synergy with Brown and the ways he’s brought with him from Atlanta. If Brown favors Espada, and Espada was hired by Luhnow, I'm struggling to understand why Espada doesn't appeal to this sentiment given that the Braves won a World Series recently after changing managers. I presume via the Atlanta way

I think that the pitching coaches that they settle have the potential to impact the team more than the manager. If you look at the splits of Brown, Javier, and Valdez it will knock you back on your heels. For instance if you look at Brown and his stats for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd time through the order and you do not come away thinking that this kid was misused as a starter last year then I would be stunned. He is a Chris Devenski kind of guy if last years stats hold true. Browns era on the second time and third time through the order would land you back in the minors on most teams. An era over 8 aint nothing to write home to momma about. Also starting Javier against a line up that is heavy with left handed hitters is just asking for a butt kicking.
This teams pitching staff needs to be reworked for personnel or by the coaches. Rolling with the status quo is asking for a break in our playoff run.

More than likely he’s going to be pitching for a West Coast or East Coast team.

theathletic.com/5036439/2023/11/06/mlb-offseason-gm-meetings-free-agents-managers-the-windup/?access_token=473194&redirected=1Per Ken Rosenthal: "...the Mets, Brewers and Guardians, are awaiting a decision from Craig Counsell, the leading managerial free agent. Two others, the Angels and Astros, seem likely to act on the whims of their owners. ... If the Astros were promoting the next in line, they would hire bench coach Joe Espada. If the choice belonged solely to general manager Dana Brown, the job might go to one of his former coaches with the Braves, Walt Weiss or Eric Young Sr. But owner Jim Crane almost certainly will have a major say, and one of his advisors, former Astros great Jeff Bagwell, might push for his former teammate, former Tigers and Angels manager Brad Ausmus. Crane is well-acquainted with Ausmus, who was a runner-up to Brown for GM and a finalist for the managing job that went to Dusty Baker in 2020."

Eh, I wouldn’t be thrilled but if they get Ausmus it wouldn’t be the end of the world as far as in-game managerial decisions go. The question would be whether he likes an analytic approach and how well he and Brown can coexist. I think I’d prefer Espada simply because of his familiarity with the organization, but I could be talking out of my ass simply because I don’t know how respected he is in the clubhouse or his ability to manage personalities.

Ausmus would have been fine during the 100 loss days, but when the team is actually good, let’s have someone who has been a part of winning.
