I didn't understand why Giles would be brought into a non-close situation. Peacock could have easily finished the game. The next couple games might conceivably be close in the 9th so better to save the closer for those situations. I understand where you are coming from. If we are going to bring on a guy to give up a double, a single and wild pitch in a run in one inning, we don’t want to waste that kind of performance. We need to save that kind of performance for the games that are close in the 9th. That's only visible in retrospect though. Usually the closer is only brought in to games where the Astros are ahead by 3 runs or less. Maybe Hinch is saying he no longer views Giles as the closer? The team is so deep, even if Giles completely melts down and racks up a 6.50 ERA in his first 10 games or something, Joe Smith or David Paulino could easily come in and take over for him. maybe even Rondon. Brendan McCurry was used as a closer for much of his minor league career. He's a soft tosser but he gets outs. I'm not an apologist for Giles but a few days ago I was simply trying to put his performance in perspective alongside that of other MLB closers and alongside his bullpen mates.

Hey Bregs next year you have to get the thundering 13 in that "Home Run Derby" they are advertising on ESPN for the All-Star game. That team has a few candidates that could win it. The starting age is 14.

I wonder what Hinch would do if guys start bunting to beat the 4-man outfield. If the batter were to simply show bunt but not go through with it, would Hinch snap the defense back to normal position? AJ is probably going to use it for selected hitters. I wonder when was the last time Gallo bunted. Maybe Gallo thinks it would be too sissy to bunt. But when his team needs baserunners more than anything else, it makes sense.

Hilarious to see the Dodgers picking up where they left off last season and *losing*, this time to SF.

But when his team needs baserunners more than anything else, it makes sense. With the left side of the infield open, it would look like an easy task. It worked with JV on the mound, maybe on a different pitcher the odds would go up for success.

I heard they’re using it for hitters whom they’d rather let get a single than an extra base hit or HR

Kyle Tucker's not afraid to bunt. Gallo's bat launch angle is locked in a certain degree. LOL

Nice to see folks here I know. Giles was his usually self. Gets ahead of his first hitter 0-2 and then throws a flat fastball right down the middle of the plate. Nice to get the W.

I heard they’re using it for hitters whom they’d rather let get a single than an extra base hit or HR If I'm the hitter, I would go for the bunt because my odds look like this: * If I bunt - 80% chance of getting on first base / 20% goes for an out * If I swing away - 5% chance of a HR, 10% chance of a hit (infield, bloop, something), 30% chance of K, 10% chance of groundout, 45% of flyout * If I just look at all the pitches - maybe 8% chance of working a walk 92% chance of K

Hope you are not the Morohobo (sp?) jerk from the Rangers board. That guy actually was making fun of Harvey victims on their board.

If he actually did that, what a complete DB....and good for Hatch, whom I use to have run-ins with, for being relentless on marboro....

So who do you think shows up first to explain to us how giving up a double and a single and run scoring wild pitch in one inning was really good work by our “closer.” I won't say Giles had a good inning yesterday, but I'll defend him by way of noting that few closers in MLB are infallible at the moment Corey Knebel blew a save yesterday and he's supposed to be one of the best

The next couple games might conceivably be close in the 9th so better to save the closer for those situations. Hinch may be trying to avoid relievers going more than one inning after the pen breakdown last October We may be seeing 2-inn outings only in close games going forward

I agree. I think that is a good strategy.

If Giles has as strong a regular season as he did last year, we'll be fine. The postseason is where he really struggled....
